Vintage Gauges vs Hole Size

Started work on the dash but Vintage Gauges slip in up to threads and then a no-go, even when trying to thread them in. Searched both forums but didn't come up with much. Is it typical to have to open up the holes. If yes what's the best method for the plastic/vinyl dash? I was thinking dremel drum but can just see that little thing slipping out and marking the vinyl.

I used a dremel with drum sander and CAREFULLY opened up the holes. .. did not take much.

Done. Careful dremel work and all is well.
