View Full Version : Type 65 Rear End Photoshop
First, I'm terrible at this forum thing. I've been threatening to start a build thread all summer, and well... it may happen eventually, but so far my daughter and I are just going through inventory.
But the real reason for this post is I was playing around with Photoshop and created something I hate :p Well, hate's a strong word, but we won't be modifying the rear of our car in this way.
We were curious what it would look like, and while it doesn't work for me, maybe somebody else will be inspired. And my apologies to whoever owns this particular Coupe, I just randomly chose this photo.
Cheers!

I thought for sure somebody would have a reaction to this photo, like:
"That's awful, what were you thinking!!"
Or
"That's brilliant, you're a genius!!"
I prefer the second reaction, it helps my ego.
My wife and kids are glad I photo shopped this first because they think it looks awful, and wouldn't let me do it even if I liked it.

I don't hate it but I certainly wouldn't do it to my car. I think you're not getting any negative feedback because most people here appreciate the creativity behind ideas like this even if it's not something they particularly like.

I don't think it's awful but not my cup of tea. My hat's off to your mad photoshop skills though. The bolt on spoiler has too much of the race car vibe for me to forego.

That's fair, but I don't mind the critique especially having submitted so many designs for feedback to clients. At some point you become numb to it as it's only pixels, or lines on a piece of paper which can easily be changed. It's nothing personal to me.
Besides which, I enjoy the self-deprecating humor and enjoy pointing out my failures or questionable ideas.
Thanks! It's fun to play with the design tools at my disposal. Good point about the race car vibe, it definitely looses that feel.
My issue with the edited version is you lose the rear profile of the car with the spoiler blended in like that.

JTG,
In my own Gen 3 Type 65 build, 2018 start > 2023 completion, I conducted numerous Photoshop design studies: the rear cove, dashboard, door inner panels, side windows shape, lower front nose corners, hood top dual vents, etc.
Check out my FFR Forum build pages "Custom Features Explained: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/album.php?albumid=2430
or my car's build Thread: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/album.php?albumid=1376
Maybe best of all is my cars dedicated Instagram site: D8YTONA_Coupe
I'm experienced at working with fiberglass, so I felt I could pull of most any design change.
Regarding the rear cove and ducktail spoiler, I haven't seen anyone try to fuse them together as you have.
It's a personal choice, but, I think that the oval shape of the rear cove is extremely important in the overall look of the car and should remain intact.
Regarding my car's rear cove, I redesigned the look size and placement of the taillights and license plate placement, all recessed into the rear cover.
Here's what I ended up with.

About 10 to 12 years ago a forum member, VMAN, created a number of different rear cove designs, but again, really just taillight and license plate changes.

Keep at it and arrive at what you prefer, it's your build and car.

Am I the only one who is digging picture #1 in those design ideas above? Kinda like #7 too.

I built that car in the first post. Highest non charity FFR to ever sell on BAT. One of my favorite builds.

Beautiful car! My apologies for the photoshop, your version is perfect as-is!
Bob,

I had to look up those tail lights, and found some that were even more expensive than the Lotus version that Bob used!

Neither will work for our budget, but it's fun to see what's available.

No, they're aftermarket taillights for roughly 2002-2004 Lotus Elise/Exige/Esprit model cars by GRP (Gregs Racing Parts). they are model GT, Rev 2, but Rev 3 has been out a number of years now. They are full Halo LED taillights. Offered as a two-lens pair (2 taillights) or in 2 lens double pairs (4 taillights as seen on my Coupe) which incorporate the white backup light in one and a reflector in the other of the 4-light set. Certainly not cheap, actually rather expensive, but they make the design statement I wanted for my coupe, larger round, modern LED taillight pairs and keep with the dual pairs of the Coupe.

I was looking to put those on the rear end of my 67 Fastback on 22 Mach 1 body swap but couldn’t bring myself to change the original lights that define that car.

Bob,
So is that your actual car or a rendering?
Either way that looks great!! When I was building my coupe I pondered using Chevy HHR taillights in the same fashion but stuck with the original lights in the end.

I like it. The ride height needs to be a bit lower, but other than that, it looks good.

John,
Yes, that's my real customized Type-65 Coupe, D8YTONA license plate. There're numerous photos and text of it on a number of websites & social media.
I documented my build process from design thru fab thru assembly and completion of the rear cove with the LED taillights and recessed license plate in this FFR Forum thread:

Bob's car is a work of art. I'm incorporating several of his design changes, on a smaller scale since I'm not nearly as talented
