I saw the other thread about the rub areas, and it reminded me I haven't figured out my floor mats yet. I did custom footboxes on both sides, so nothing off the shelf will work. I should have plenty of carpet to make floor mats, though, but I wasn't sure about the edge binding.
Is there a particular product that works best for making your own binding, vs. paying someone locally to do it? If you do have someone do it, is it a carpet store?
You might not like this idea but its working great for me. I tried many different floor mats and they all wore quickly from my heel. They also moved around too much for my taste. So, I made "floor mats" out of diamond plate aluminum using a snug-fitting cardboard template. Then, I sprayed them with bed liner. They are virtually invisible down in the footwells but they keep your heel planted, are non slip, and may provide some degree of protection from road debris coming up through the soft aluminum floor.

I have witnessed the carpeted floormats bunching up and catching the go-fast pedal...pretty scarey! I had some of the coin pattern garage floor squares (20" x 20" you can get from Lowe's or HD) and cut to fit. Mine is black and fit under the footbox tubing so it doesn't slide around. As with DMW's solution, it is nearly invisible to most passers-by.

I cut extra carpet to the size of the floor mat I wanted and then had a local upholster buddy of mine put a non-slip backing on it and edge binding. If you do the non-slip though (which I recommend) be sure they only do it at the frotn and rear halves. Leave about a six inch or so gap in the middle, otherwise the mat will not fold neatly over the 2-inch cross bar and sit flat down in the footbox. Ask me how I know! :p

Good ideas guys, thanks. I'll have to see what's available for binding and backing as well.

I'm planning on using this stuff for the floor mat edges:

To hold the mats in place, I want to put heavy duty snap (black) on the mats and rivet the other part of the snaps to the floor.

I like that binding. I've had a couple of vehicles with a sort of wingnut/T that holds the mats in place. But...one thing I might try is a little like what Howard did, using something rigid. I have an old chair mat (the ones with the spikes on the bottom). That might make for a perfect backing on the floor mats, if not over the whole thing, maybe towards the back to hold it in place. I'll have to play around a bit.
