View Full Version : Troubleshooting - Hydroboost Noise and Air

I installed a hydroboost kit on my build recently, and am having trouble getting things running smoothly. It makes a horrible noise whenever the brake is pressed, or while turning the wheel. There's also a lot of air in the PS reservoir. The fluid in there appears frothy.

I did bench-bleed the MC and brake lines. I pressure-tested the high-pressure lines and fixed the one leak that was identified. The brakes feel very responsive, and the wheels turn as expected... There's just a lot of noise and air. Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions are welcome!

EDIT: Should probably add some context. The engine is a gen 3 Coyote, the PS pump is the one from Factory Five, and the hydroboost kit is from Forte (from what I gather, it's largely the same setup as he usually sells, but with a newer Wilwood MC).

The hydroboost system is a force generator between the brake pedal and the brake master cylinder. The brake line circuit/fluid (brake lines, brakes, MC, reservoirs) has no interaction with the power steering fluid. I apologize if you already knew that - it wasn't clear from my take on your post.

It looks/sounds like pump cavitation when under load and you need to bleed your power steering system. I put jack stands under the front to lift the wheels off the ground and then turned the wheel lock to lock many times (25+) with the engine off and reservoir cap off. I then ran the engine briefly (<1 min), turned it off, and repeated the process again. I don't have any pump noise and the fluid is clear, without any bubbles. The fluid level of my reservoir is also higher. If your fluid level is too low, the return port is above the fluid and could agitate the fluid. Good luck.

James, thank you for the helpful response. And no apologies necessary. Even though I did understand that the brake and PS circuits are separate, it's always better to assume that I don't know something!

I followed your suggestion two or three times. There was a lot of air that got cycled out, and the noise is much improved while idling in the driveway. It is still somewhat loud while driving around the neighborhood, though. I'll keep trying to bleed additional air out of the system a few more times and report back.

When I installed my HB, I was told to turn it 30 times fully to the right and left to bleed the air. I did this while it was n jack stands. This was to bleed the air out of the P/S system.
