If anyone is doing their own paint work, Harbor Freight has their HVLP and HTE paint guns on sale today for $99, down from $179. One day only sale. One of my patients informed me of this today and it looks like I'll be swinging by after work to get some stuff.

While you're there pick up one of their purple guns for primer. For under $20 bucks you can use it and throw it away. If you're going to use it for high build like Slick Sand or Featherfill drill the tip out with a #44 bit.

Jeff, do you recommend to use separate guns for colors and clear coat? Or is a primer gun and a color/clear gun enough for a single build?

Thanks. I was actually looking for this info as I recall you posted it a few weeks ago. If I’m not doing a polyester high fill primer, what size tip is recommended for urethane or epoxy primer?

I do urethane primer surfacer with a 1.4 at 31psi and sealer with 1.3 at 23 psi but different guns (and different users!) may work better with other sizes and settings.

If my paint store purchase does not include application specs and instructions, I get online and download them. That has worked OK. I do have a lower end big gun for primers and better guns for base coats and clear.
I have a low end mini gun that works remarkably well on small jobs and difficult to access projects.

Does the paint have to be baked on before clear coating or after? Or do you just let it cure at room/outdoor temp? If baked on, do you use IR lamps? Just curious how it's done at home. Thanks

The paint and clear flash off, where the solvents evaporate. No baking or curing necessary. You do need to work within a temp range specified by the manufacturer.
