Hey guys,

While I'm still waiting on my 289 kit, naturally I'm thinking of important things like what color the car should be. Although have Viking Blue on my shortlist, I've also been looking at what colors the original AC cars came out in. While there were eight colors from what I can tell, the one that's getting my attention is maroon, which from what I understand is very close to Ford's Vintage Burgandy.

Have any of you painted your car in this color, and if so do you mind sharing a pic or two?

Thanks!

Rob

You could try a render on Google Gemini. Last week a lot of were playing with that and it came up with some pretty good renders. I think it would be a great tool for looking at color combinations.

Attached is what I got from the following prompt:
"create and image of a Shelby 289 Cobra painted in Ford's Vintage Burgandy Front of car towards viewer"

That color is so close to the State Troopers in Minnesota I had to do one more prompt:
'create and image of a Shelby 289 Cobra painted in Ford's Vintage Burgandy Front as Minnesota State Patrol car'

I like the dual shotguns mods! Who will be the first to add this to their ride? The lightbar on a single roll bar would work better then attached to the windscreen, especially for taller drivers.

Here's an original 427 parked at Pacific Raceways last year. It's aluminum bodied with some recessed lights and license plate, I was told it was originally spec'd like that.

I like that burgundy. Much nicer than the blue that SO many Cobras end up.

Here is my MK 4 that I completed in April. A short story about the paint. About six years ago I finished building a Thunderbolt tribute. A 1964 Ford Fairlane, with a 427 FE, 4 speed top loader, open exhaust, ect, ect, I built it as a drag car. Of the 100 Thunderbolts produced 90 were Wimblton White, only10 were "Burgandy" including Bob Tasca's. When it was time for paint we decided on HOK Kandy Brandywine. It was a close match to the Burgandy, but with modern paint. The Paint was stunning and the car won 48 awards in the six years before I sold it to finance the MK 4. When deciding on the color for the Cobra it was a no brainer. We went with the latest "Shimmerin II" from HOK in Brandywine #12.

Enjoy!

We also went with HOK Shimrin2 paint in Cobalt Blue Kandy over silver. https://www.houseofkolor.com/kolors/detail/index.html?id=HOK000566-01&ref=kolors

Of course I'm biased but I think it's damn hard to beat HOK colors for the WOW factor. Every single person that sees our car comments about the color and how spectacular it looks.

With profound apologies to Louis Armstrong:

What a Wonderful Ride
(to be sung to the tune of “What a Wonderful World”)

I see Cobras of blue,
Purple roadsters too,
Bright polished headers
And wide tires new,
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful ride.

I see sunlight on chrome,
Leather stitched tight,
Roll hoops behind me
And stripes shining white,
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful ride.

The thunder of engines
So sweetly they roar,
The pull of the torque
When you press it once more.
I see friends by the track,
Waving flags high,
Sharing the passion
As Cobras go by,
And I think to myself,
What a wonderful ride.

Yes, I think to myself,
What a wonderful ride.

So this sent me down a deep dark rabbit hole of ai. Vozart.ai seems to be the best.

Pick a theme (born in the USA) hand jam some lyrics and voila, 5 minutes later you have a decent song… I won’t post the mp3s here but it’s pretty dang good.

Crazy and pretty cool how fast you can do something. Sorry for hijacking the thread…

With even more apologies to Bruce Springsteen..

Built in the USA:

Grew up in a garage with a wrench in my hand,
Dreamed of a big block rolling this land,
Blood on my knuckles, sweat on the floor,
We’re building machines like never before.

Steel and chrome under red-white-blue skies,
Hammer and torch, yeah the spirit survives.

Chorus
Built in the U.S.A.!
Yeah, we’re built in the U.S.A.!
Built not bought — that’s how we roll,
Hand-made horsepower and a rock ’n’ roll soul.

Verse 2
No showroom shine, no plug-and-play,
Every bolt turned is the American way,
Rumble of thunder from a hand-tuned heart,
A freedom machine is a rolling work of art.

Pre-Chorus
Steel and chrome under red-white-blue skies,
Hammer and torch, yeah the spirit survives.

Chorus
Built in the U.S.A.!
Yeah, we’re built in the U.S.A.!
Built not bought — that’s how we roll,
Hand-made horsepower and a rock ’n’ roll soul.

Bridge
It’s more than a car, it’s a badge of pride,
On open highways we’re gonna ride.

Final Chorus
Built in the U.S.A.!
Built in the U.S.A.!
Built not bought — and we’re never gonna stop,
From the small-town shop to the mountaintop.

Beyond a nice burgundy then you can go further classic w/ a medium to dark brown interior.

I don't think it's a surprise to anyone here that one of the HARDEST decisions when building one of these cars is color (unless you need to have the traditional Guardsman w/white stripes, which obviously is cool). Don't get me wrong - as I mentioned before, Viking Blue is on my short list (with the white front cross stripe). But it would also be cool to go with a less used, although still traditional color. Since I'm building a 289 USRRC car I'm also going to check out some of the non-factory/non-Shelby racers to see what schemes they came up with. The theme I'm leaning into is retired race car, but that's not hard and fast. Which is why Vintage Burgandy is now in the mix ;)

I've actually thought about telling Kleiner to surprise me with a color for mine, and not reveal it to me until I pick it up! I don't really care what color mine is. It'll drive the same, regardless what color is on it!

Jeff...you game? :)

Be carefull with that!... My dad told me a story about a guy in LA back in the mid 50s who brought his recently built hot rod to a guy who was known for his "out landish/cool paint jobs and told him to "do his thing with it". When he picked the car up the "painter" had made hundreds of dents in the panels, painted it, then pinstriped spider webs in all the dents. Though Jeff seems a tad more conservative than that.

Yeah, I don't see Jeff doing anything like that, especially if his name is on the work. ;)

Yes, I do agree with you that it'll be a while until the car is ready for paint. But having a visual in my head helps with the process. Like I said earlier, color (for me at least) is probably the hardest choice I'll have to make with this build, so I'm trying to get ahead of the curve a bit ;)

We probably did 20 sprayouts to get the blue we wanted. You can easily do them yourself, get a stack of those little car looking things and a cheap HF airbrush. Companies like Coast Airbrush sell small amounts of paint so you don't break the bank. Or your local English Color can mix pints for you.

We went through so many blues I didn't think we were going to find the wow color we were looking for. It was suggested that we look at HOK, honestly I remembered them from decades ago and didn't even know they were still in business. I talked to their main tech guy and learned a ton. Got some of their Cobalt Blue candy and sprayed it over light and dark primer but it still didn't pop like we wanted. Then tried going old school and sprayed it over silver. That was it.

Though getting spray outs was normal in the FFR build process. Mine was done at Whitby's in Greensboro NC that way in 2014. BTW worked in a paint factory as a kid in college & making spray outs for color continuity batch to batch was one of my jobs. Small world.

Ollie has one of the prettiest maroon cars I’ve seen! PM him to see what paint he used.

Honestly, deciding on a color was one of the hardest parts of the build! As I tell people, you have to walk out to your garage in ten years and still go “Wow! I own that!”.

I settled for Ford Redfire and Silver Parchment stripes (02 or 03 colors).
