Getting ready to order my MK5 Roadster kit soon and am just curious how the sales tax works. I've read in another post that FFR won't charge you sales tax and you just pay that at the DMV when going through the registration process. Does DMV just look at the total cost from FFR and calculate tax based on that? The base kit starts around $25k but after adding all my options it brings it up to around $46k plus another $21k for their Coyote/trans package. So will I pay sales tax on that full $67k? If thats the case, am I better off just ordering a more basic kit closer to the $25k and then buying the other items separately? Not sure how closely the DMV looks at the receipts to verify every part on the car is accounted for. I can't see them looking at the car and saying something like, hmm, I see a power steering kit on there but I don't recall seeing that in the receipts.

For every one that I've done in Indiana the BMV has calculated sales tax from the FFR invoice total plus any other non-taxed receipts provided. I assume that California will do the same. If you try to save a buck by skipping options so that they don't show up on the original invoice and then purchasing them later any sales tax savings will probably be offset by the additional shipping charges.
