View Full Version : Dave, how were the 1/4 scale models made?

As the title said how were the quarter scale models made? I know that Xabier's design was modeled by RISD but how about the others. Were they machined, 3d printed, some other way? I'm just curious about the technology used. Maybe give whoever did it some props.

That information is already provided in other posts and in the videos shot explaining the models.

Maybe someone should make a sticky informational post that is locked to replies.

Two of the models were 3D printed. Xabiers was molded from clay by students at the RISD. The in-house model was created from scanning the full sized model and then producing a 1/4 model from the scan. I don't know if it was 3d printed or not. Perhaps someone from the factory will chim in for that one...

HTH,

The RISD car was (is) all clay. The thing is 1/4 scale but it is HEAVY!. As Dave H. Said, the other three cars were full CAD files that were milled to scasle (I dont think they were 3d printed) and painted by a Florida tech company. The current (first iteration) production body is going to tooling shortly and I'll be releasing some shots of that one shortly, but the whole project cost depends on this integration of CAD technology tremendously.

Exciting times, eagerly awaiting the spy shots. We all know however great design 1 is, not everyone will be instantly in love with it, so suggestion, when the spy pics are released, make sure to reiterate that its the first of several designs planned for the 818. Hopefully that will keep the 'they didn't choose my favorite so I'm taking my ball and going home' reactions to a minimum.

No matter what FFR does their will be a faction of unhappy people, I suspect it'll be a real a small but vocal group. With the vast amount of design ideas that FFR has recieved (at a ridiculously low price I might add) I'm sure we'll see something new and exciting.

Or it'll be a Stratos replica.

Which by the way I'd totally get behind too.

Truth is more simple. The chassis is such an amazing platform, unfettered by any replica requirements and really capable of serving more than one purpose. Truth is also that we cannot launch and support three cars at once, so the first model goes and the others follow based on the rules of demand. IF it was ever going to be a replica, I am on board the stratos express. I've seen the final shape and am pleased that it will do everything I hoped for the car.

From one Dave to another; don't worry there is a collective "WOOHOO!!" going on by all the regular readers of this forum.

Thanks for the answers Dave, its amazing what is possible with a project once it becomes a 3d cad model.

That would be freaking awesome. A Subie powered Stratos replica? I seriously considered one of the HF3000's but with the exchange rate and the donor availablitity it just didn't seem like a good idea for a State side replica.

Other than the Esprit, the Stratos is my only other true (automotive) love. I'm on board for the 818, but if there is a Stratos version, I'd just have to build another!

Way to go Dave!!! Soon we get to peek behind the curtain. I for one couldn't be more excited.
