Hi All,
What have some of the other builders on the forum chosen to replace the FFR supplied ignition switch? I can't say I'm a fan of how it looks in the dash. I got my kit last year, so I have the cheap pot metal switch. (It works fine, but...)
I was thinking of a 1965 Mustang switch and bezel. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your input!

You can get a molded head GM type key cut at just about any hardware store.

I used the 65 Mustang switch. They can be purchased as a kit from Kentucky Mustang and a wiring plug from loads of online suppliers.

There was a time that FFR sent a molded double sided key with the kits. I found one on the forum from a builder that used push a push button. They went away during the pandemic supply chain crunch. Would love to see those return. They had the logo on them and felt IMO substantial. Be willing to bet most builders would pay extra as an “upgraded” option if they brought those back. I would. I went with a push button RFID system this time and skipped the key all together.

Thanks, guys!
I would much rather have had a nicer switch and key set delivered with the kit. It just feels and looks cheap, IMHO, to have a key that looks like it opens my backyard shed door instead of starting a Cobra (even if it is a replica). Its a first-world problem, I know....

I also used a 1965 Mustang ignition switch as well as the corresponding chrome bezel. https://www.cjponyparts.com/cj-classics-ignition-switch-bezel-chrome-mustang-1965-1966/p/HW1536/?srsltid=AfmBOopdpQ90TW4tkQRPqdEi8tXx6bjW9XuDEB_8T viXqqbBlCw_EBEzEFQ

Same here. The key is one sided and goes in upside down......just like all the other 1960s Fords I've owned. Feels right for this 1965 replica.

As others have mentioned - I went with the '65 Mustang Switch + key cylinder + bezel. Looks great with the other swapped hardware. I wanted all the hardware on the dash to match and unfortunately you have to swap out most of the FFR provided switches to get there. I used the one from the APC kit, but had to buy the cylinder + a set of keys (https://www.cjponyparts.com/ignition-switch-cylinder-1965-1966/p/HW1541/), and a spacer (https://www.cjponyparts.com/cj-classics-ignition-switch-spacer-mustang-1965-1966/p/HW1538/) to mount it to the dash

Thanks, Darryl. I like that classic, simple look. I think I might go ahead with the Mustang switches. Now off to find a headlight switch...

Be warned - I bought the Mustang headlight switch, but it was MUCH larger than the FFR provided switch which I believe is a GM part. With the location I mounted it on the carbon fiber dash, in the lower bump-out section, the switch angles down and towards the firewall and hangs way too low. If you mount it higher up on the dash, not in the bump-out, you should be fine. Due to my location, I ended up sticking with the FFR provided switch and just swapped out the knob for the Mustang knob which you can buy separately (just mounts with a set screw). You can tell because the mounting nut is different than the ones on the other two switches, but unless you look closely you'll never notice it. In the pic, the FFR headlight switch is on the left side of the bump-out next to the horn button. You can still use a Mustang bezel with the FFR headlight switch so it matches the others. All this is detailed in my build thread if you need more info, or ping me with a private message.

I bought the 65 mustang ignition switch from cjponyparts and had to modify the spring to be able to turn the key in the ignition. Wonder if anyone else had that issue?

I put that into my first build which had the padded dash. It is thicker than the metal dash on the 60s mustangs so yes, I had to cut the spring to get it short enough to allow the cup to engage. Using the carbon fiber dash on my wife's build and haven't got to that part yet so will see as the carbon fiber dash is thinner than the other one.
