View Full Version : Coyote eng hoist problems 🤔

The coyote is giving me a bit of a fit on how to pick it up. I've got the harbor freight engine hoist. I've got the BIG RED leveler. I've got the what I think are the ffr engine lifts at the right rear and left front. I've messed with all sorts of different chain configurations and ever since I got the engine. Once I took the transmission off, it became extremely apparent that it was heavy towards the right front. Will the adding the new trans make it all go away? Common sense says it will make it better but it feels way off. I'm not sure how this would actually work given that I need to put as much tip as I need to put in to install the engine. It acts like it wants to be a three-point pickup? Is there a way to mount something off the right front and the left front and the right rear to gain tip? Really scratching my head here. I'm about ready to install the flywheel bellhousing transmission combo. But I'm not really sure how I'm going to be able to get the tip correct to get into the vehicle.
I think the current way I've been doing it. I don't have a chance in hell of being able to get the tail shaft down with enough angle.
Help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

With the transmission on, it will hang like this. At that point it's close enough that one person can push down on the tail shaft to get whatever additional drop you need to drop it in.

If you are trying to test fit without the tranny you can play with shortening chains on one side as needed. Also, there is nothing that says you can't use a piece of soft rope on the right front corner up to your lift hook to level it out a bit, just be careful of the soft parts.

Raise the rear of the frame as far as you safely can.
We installed a gen 3 with a T-56 & it will go but it's a lot safer for the starter & alternator if you remove them.

See that's what I was expecting.
I like the rope idea, maybe a ratchet strap of sorts in the right spot. I guess I'll just have to re evaluate once the trans is on. Just looks really off and doesn't pick up straight either.

Should be fine once you mount the trans (I have a T56 on mine). I have the same lift brackets and a similar leveler (might be the same one even). Here's a time lapse showing me pulling it out so I could run electrical:

Can't say that I had any trouble getting the Coyote level side-to-side with the two usual lifting points. Shorten the chain on one side as needed and adjust the leveler as needed. With just two of us, it was a bit of a handful to push the transmission down far enough. I ended up with a strap around the end and back to the lift. Worked very well.

I was Reviewing this last night EdwardB, I think just before you posted it. I was contemplating the ratchet on the tail and if it would "snap" too quickly when I let length out and hit the body. That and reading up on dbo_Texas's post on removing the PS hex plug on the oil pan ;)

Don't over think it. Lots of Coyotes installed with no issues. Hook it up and stuff it in there! An engine install may be one of the easiest things you do on your build. ;)

The strap just removes some of the effort to push the transmission angle down to get under the firewall. It's not a big deal. When we did the one pictured, with two of us (one on the shop crane, the other guiding the engine) it helped a lot. As you lower the engine into place and push the shop crane back everything levels out and the strap mostly loosens by itself. At that point, the helper is standing over the transmission tunnel and guiding it into place. Nothing snaps. As already said, don't overthink it. Not that hard...

With the transmission installed using a ratchet strap to pull the transmission down like EdwardB shows works like a champ. Just be sure to hold onto the strap as you let the strap out or it will give you one of those pucker moments that make you have to check your drawers. Ask me how I know haha

This is EXACTLY what I mean by "snap back". I think the key is before you let the strap loose push the tail down then let out slack.

I put a strap on the engine from the front of the motor up to the engine hoist, I find it better to raise the front, thereby lowering the back, than to pull down on the hoist which is intended to be lifting the whole assembly.
