I think I am the victim of the infamous chrome cover on my FFR supplied Moser 8.8 rear end. For my new MK5, with motor not in yet, so just sitting. Added gear lube to differential, and now I see drips. Checked front seal and drain plug and not those, all bolts are tight. I searched the Forum, and there seem to have been some issues over the years. I had seen posted where Moser has been gracious enough to send you a new seal. I assume it will be up to me to resolve the issue.
I see aluminum covers are available from $55 up in price and are supposed to seal better. Anyone have any recommendations.?
Thanks, Ralph

Remove the cover, clean it and it's mating surface on the diff and reinstall with a generous bead of Permatex 81182...no gasket.

Wow, I knew Permatex made a lot of sealers, but one specific to gear oil is amazing.

I thought the same thing. Thanks Jeff!

I had the same issues w/ my chrome cover. Drain the fluid into a clean container so you can reuse it. I scuffed the smooth surface of the chrome w/ some sandpaper then reinstalled w/ RTV.

I just wonder why Moser would not correct the issue at their factory and not make the customer fix it later. You would think a new product would not leak.

The Moser 8.8 diff bought for my 35 truck build also developed a slow leak. I contacted Moser with the appropriate amount of complaining and suggesting it was a common problem. They didn't offer any explanation other than to send me a new gasket. Thanks... I did what others have suggested. Drained the fluid and thoroughly cleaned both surfaces. Then back together without a gasket. Based on several recommendations I used Permatex The Right Stuff to seal. First time I used it. Expensive but I was impressed. No more leaks the rest of the time I had the truck.

They wouldn't know if there is a leak that needs to be corrected since they ship them dry.

It's because they don't give a rat's *** about their customers.

The one downside to the RightStuff is it's shelf life. I once used it on a water pump I had a hard time sealing. + is it worked great. - is 3-4 months later i wanted to use it again but it had sealed it's own container. It's a bit more expensive than other sealers but it's real expensive for a one time use.

I use Hylomar Blue with gaskets: diff, water pump and anything else. Never fails.

Be glad you don't have irs. If you did you would have to remove the diff to get the cover off.
