Okay - there are times where some things just aren't adding up, but it seems it should be easy, so this thread is dedicated to the MKV builds for those who may or may not be first-time builders who might feel a bit sheepish about questions.

I'll start here:

Installing the steering column on the MKV 30th Anniv, have it pretty well set up. The manual says there is hardware for the upper steering shaft (see picture) in the same box. But WHERE?? Is it in the large fasteners kit? supposed to be with the upper shaft (mine isn't). I can't seem to locate it in my box. I've had many-a-h/w missing, so it's possible this is just another one of those. To be clear, I have the shaft, just don't see the h/w

The last page of the build manual on the MK4 (am assuming the MKV is the same) has all the parts in the fastener pack listed. I just checked and do not see them listed there. It is possible it got moved to a different box. Check your inventory manifest. If you still can't find it send FFR an email. I guarantee you there will be a set in the mail the next day.

The Mk5 kit also has the hardware pack list on the last page of the build manual. The large Allen head screw and washer was in the hardware pack. I don't see the Belleville washers on the list, but they did come with my kit. I'm not home right now so can't tell you which box. I'd bet in the same one as the steering column pieces.

Sorry, as usual Paul is more right than I am. I only looked for the washers. So for the sake of clarity and future builders the bolts that are used to secure the pillow blocks came from the faster pack in the MK4 as well.

I did look in my inventory and for me at least it was box #1. See the attached pics.

Okay - I will call them tomorrow. I did see that on the list - thanks for confirming that's what I'm looking for (the manual only showed the pic).

thanks again for taking the time!

For the Mk5 Belleville washers are in Box #1 along with steering shafts, bearings and u-joints and the other IFS parts and are identified as "13860 1/4" spring washer 2.00 ea" in a small plastic zip bag.

Jeff, you being the pro that you are, I have a question about the belleville washers. On my Mk5, i have dressed up the upper shaft with 400 grit, greased, and installed the washers. The shaft had to be rubber hammered in and I notice in the dash install instructions you should pull this shaft out to install the dash. I just tested pulling out the upper shaft, set screws not tight, and had to use a pry bar to get it out. The shaft moves freely without the washers and there is no slop. Are the washers really necessary, as I understand there are to prevent rattles or slop. I know the shaft is supposed to go inward in case of an accident, but I doubt mine would move before my chest bones. Some say leave the washers out until last assembly, but I wonder about their functionality.
What would be your comments?

Thanks, Ralph

You need to keep dressing and lubing the shaft &/or double D tube until it moves freely. You should never have to hammer it in or pry it out.

Thanks Jeff. Could alignment of the steering haft have any effect? I have raised the center bearing all the way up an lowered the rear bearing about 3/4" as you had mentioned previously to get a better angle on the steering wheel.
I will continue dressing until it moves freely.
