View Full Version : Function of the Tail light Converter

I am working on my MK5 but not going to use the provided turn signal switch. I will be using Street Works push button turn signal switches. The FFR assembly manual states that the taillight converter is not used in the MK5 with the column turn signal switch. The Chassis Wiring Harness manual states that after 9-16-2019 kits used rectangular taillights for all functions, and the taillight converter was included with the kits. I assume the converter is for some LED function in the rectangular lights and somehow the turn signal switch now performs the function of the converter.
Do I need to order a converter from FFR to overcome the lack of the turn signal switch, and use the RF harness, or is something else required?
Bear with me as I am electrically challenged, so be kind.

I’m not sure how the Streetworks signals work but the tail light converter works by controlling how the tail lights function. Ie since the tail light is practically 1 light with 2 brightness levels, it will enable to light to blink when the indicator is used at the same time as the brake. Without the converter the light would have full brightness from the brake signal and the turn signal would have no effect.

The street works might have this functionality built in. I don’t know.

if you’re getting a tail light converter, don’t get it from F5. Many have reported issues with it and mine failed 2 weeks after install. Instead, most seem to have had better luck with a Tekonsha 119130 converter.

The GM turn signal switch used in the Mk5 accomplishes the same thing without any fancy electronics. It has wipers and contacts that switch between turn signal and brake lights based on the stalk position. Similar switch used in the ididit steering column, used in the 33 hot rod and 35 hot rod truck for some time, which is why the RF connector is called the hot rod connector.

The Watsons Streetworks website doesn't have instructions or a schematic for their product (at least that I could readily find) so can't say whether the trailer converter is needed or not.

I have an Ffr taillight converter you can have if you wish.

I have had an excellent response from edwardb that a converter is not necessary in my application. He reviewed the StreetWorks instructions and thinks it is not a difficult path to wire the buttons. Maybe best solution is to tie into the Hot Rod connector wires.
I am more electrically challenged than the pros, so will keep you advised of progress.

Your taillights conmbine two functions into one light. A bright one for the blinkers and a dimmer one for the running lights. The bright one is used for the blinkers or turn signlas and the dim one is on when your headlights are on.

The taillight converter combines the brake lights with the blinkers using the same buld. The converter allows the turn signals to continue to flash when the brakes are applied (one side on and the other blinking).

The Streetworks controller will take control of the turn signal lights and handle the brake/turn functions without the taillights converter.

No taillight converter is needed when using a lights controller like Streetworks, Microflex Labs, or Advanced Turn Signal.
