I'm getting ready to swap my carb, I've got a 427W (9.5 deck height) with a Victor Jr. intake. I currently run an Edelbrock Performer carb. I really like the new Edelbrock RVS carb (Holley clone) but it' a half inch taller than the Holley (and pricey!). I'm going with a Holley or Brawler with either a mechanical choke or no choke.
I presently have the black "Cobra oval" air cleaner but know it's not optimal. I'm looking for a recommendation for a good drop base air cleaner. I am aware that not only do I need to clear the hood...I also need to be concerned with the clearance with things such as choke, throttle linkage, etc

I used this on a 351 (tall block compared to 302) w/ Performer RPM intake (somewhat taller than others I think) and QF carb.

I went with a K&N 14" round, 2 1/2" deep, with the Xtreme filter top. This combo will flow over 900 cfm where the Cobra oval only flows about 550 cfm. On the dyno, the Cobra oval was reducing performance by 70+ HP and causing over richness.217923

I like units like this and have run one for many years. Summit has a variety of these.

There are various drop heights. 14" x 3" work well. The smooth flow, without sharp transitions seems to make sense from an airflow perspective. BUT - a choke horn interferes with the flow and may hit the top.

I used this one from Summit with a Brawler 650 (Holley 4150) and Performer RPM Air Gap on a 302 based 347.

It comes with an 3” element but mine easily clears the hood (no scoop yet) with a 4” element. Not sure with a 351 based motor, maybe a 3” will clear? I have seen multiple videos of air cleaners with the filter elements in the top lid as well as the round outer filter and they don’t flow much better (sometimes worse) than just a solid lid and round element—the air coming from the top disrupts the smooth air that’s been shaped from the sides.
