View Full Version : Why did FFR Change the Brake Master Cylinder Size for Gen 3 Coupe?

I've noticed (as have others) that FFR now supply two 3/4" brake master cylinders, but the build manual states 3/4" for the front and 5/8" for the rear. A smaller diameter cylinder for the rear makes sense to me, as the rear caliper has only one piston while the front has two pistons and therefore needs a higher volume of fluid and therefore a larger master cylinder.

Why then has the setup been changed to 3/4" for both front and rear?

I'm very keen to get this right, as I'm not used to cars without a brake booster and I'm already worried that I might not get enough stopping power!

That change to both front and back 3/4" MC's was made a number of years ago. I never heard the reason. Obviously the build manual hasn't kept up. My Gen 3 Coupe came with both 3/4" and has been on the road for five seasons. Stops fine.

Thanks for the quick response Edward :-)

Good to know your brakes work well. I wonder if you have the same rotor/caliper setup as me - I have the standard FFR offering which is Mustang GT 11" front and 2015 Mustang IRS 11.65" rear. Do you have a Wilwood setup or anything more fancy?

Yes, the Gen 3 Coupe I mentioned has the big Wilwood brake setup. There are many variables to what brakes are used in these builds, pads, balance setting, etc. These all need to be sorted and you'll find lots of information and advice on the setup. There's a whole other discussion about manual vs. power. All important to determine for your build. But my advice is don't get sidetracked on this topic. The 3/4" front/back MC's have been around for a number of years and used successfully with multiple setups. IMO and experience not a variable that needs attention.

Thanks again Edward - I really appreciate your level-headed advice. I'll stick with the 3/4" cylinders (which are already on the car!) and see how they work out. :)
