View Full Version : Electrical issue - bad trailer converter?

I've run into an interesting issue. I completed all the wiring and tested all functions. Everything worked exactly as it should. Now, a few weeks later, an interesting issue has developed. Yesterday, when I used the turn signal to the right - everything worked as it should but when I indicated left, both tail lights would flash. Today, and more interestingly, the gauge lights flash as well when I indicate left. The same happens when I turn on the flashers and also when I step on the brake, which wasn't the case yesterday. I don't have the front turn signals attached any longer so don't know yet if/how they are affected.

Since the trailer converter is a common point for the affected circuits (brake, turn L, turn R, tail light feed), could this be a bad trailer converter that's back-feeding to the light switch, sending voltage through the tan tail light feed to the light switch, activating the gauge feed? I remember seeing something about others having issues with the F5 included trailer converter and just wondering what those symptoms looked like.

Video below to show how it looks today...

Happy to hear thoughts.

Just to close out this issue. It was indeed the trailer converter (tail light converter). I exchanged the F5 provided converter with a Tekonsha 119130 and the issue is resolved. Hopefully it lasts longer than the 2 weeks the provided controller lasted...

Glad you got it sorted. I switched to that same converter after the first two bit the dust (whatever brand FFR provides). Actually, one was DOA.

Crazy how poor the quality seems to be on the provided converter. Glad they’ve gone to the GM turn signal for the MkV

Just ran into this four days ago. FFR provided the Hopkins #48847, which worked as it should for about a week. I go to test everything after closing up the drivers footwell and the left tail light no longer blinks or brakes. The tail light function works on all lights and the right turn/brake is fully functional but the left turn/brake is dead. Everything traces back to a bad converter. I was about to buy another Hopkins, but after reading this thread I will definitely switch brands.

I don't know if brand matters. They may all be junk.
I installed my second one with plug together connectors so that it can be easily changed and carry a spare.
