Hi all. Working on brakes and have got all the bolts in between the hat and the rotor. Wilwood say you may (but not must) wire each of the nuts together. I likely wont be tracking my car, may do once or twice but not a track car. Two questions:
1) is it a lot of work
2) is it necessary
Thank you.
Chris
I did a step-by-step here: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?51489-Papa-s-Retirement-Type-65-Coupe-Build-Index-in-first-post&p=586248&viewfull=1#post586248
Not too hard and looks cool even if you don't really need it.

I kind of enjoyed it. I ran three drywall screws into my workbench, centered in three of the lug holes to hold the rotor while I did the safety wire.

It's not a big deal to do, and as others have mentioned oddly satisfying.
It is a bit tedious but not unenjoyable. I would do it even if not tracking the car. I mean, after you've finished mounting them when are you ever going to back and check the torque spec on your rotor bolts? They certainly do get heat cycled, which tends to loosen bolts over time. I would do at least half of them for peace of mind.
Look on the bright side: if you're not tracking the car you may never need to replace the rotors, so may never have to do it more than once!

I just looked at it as another skill I got the opportunity to to learn. As JMD said, it's sort of fun, but a bit tedious.

Never did before this build, took a few hours in the living room watching TV to complete. Once you get a rhythm it goes fairly quickly. Like others said weirdly satisfying when done.

To quote Paul: “It’s sort of a rite of passage with these brakes…” - I couldn’t have said it better myself. Enjoy it!

And you won't be lectured by an A&P mechanic, unless you do it backwards.

My view is that if it were necessary, they would have included the wire. Assume you used the threadlocker red?
I would have done it - but now have the four corners assembled so I'm not inclined to undo all that just to add the optional safety wire.

Thread locker is softened up to release with heat, so I’m not sure how that helps you on a brake rotor. It’s honestly not that hard to safety wire the bolts, and it’s the right thing to do.

45 years as an aircraft mech. EVERYTHING gets saftey wired. Old hat. Better safe than sorry. Old addage: better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
