View Full Version : Coyote GEN 3 Idle Question

My car has been running fora couple years with a few thousand miles on it. My question is regarding idling and RPMs. When I come to stop the car settles into an idle at a bout 800 RPMs. After a around 10 seconds or so, it moves up to 900 RPMs and the sound and cadence changes and gets louder. It will drop back to 800 and up to 900 depending on how long I am stopped. Is this normal? My only frame of reference are daily driver production cars which don't seem to do that.
Thanks Craig

Craig,
I had this on my Gen 3 too. Rsnake posted a video on his channel about this and it worked for me. My initial tune was not able to correct this but when I went back for the final tune on the dyno I gave my tuner this info and it fixed it!

Good luck

Thanks for the shout out! It is annoying as hell and once the easy change is made it's a world of difference.
Snowman is the one that discovered this programming error from ford.

Yes, super annoying! I assumed it was just normal. Can't wait to get it corrected.

I complained to Ford and Lund and was told by both that its normal. It took Snowman and his amazing tuning skills to figure it out.
My video goes into detail about the small correction

I’m going to try and find a local tuner rather than having to go back to Lund who did my tune as well.

I'm in the exact same boat also with a Lund tune. What do you think our chances of getting them to fix it? Let me know how your tune goes and if you end up doing it remote. I still have my tuner around here somehwere.

I think zero chance of getting them to fix it especially since the tune was done so long ago.

Lund made me do a 1 year service agreement for $100, if I remember correctly. They made the quick change as I think it was changing a value in the idle parameters from a negative to a positive and that was it. Quick and easy. Reach out to them.

They’re saying they aren’t familiar with it. Any chance I can share your contact info or a case number to jog their memory?

I spoke to them yesterday and LUND said for a $150 they would move my ticket to a calibrator and they would review a Datalog and then advice/revise accordingly. I plan on doing this. Rsnake, if there is a case number that would be helpful. I sent them the YouTube video but the customer service person (Josh) said they couldn't open outside links. Also, there first suggestion was to build a shroud around the filter to protect the MAF sensor from unwanted turbulence. Thats not something I care to do. I will keep you posted.

We're talking to the same guy - He mentioned I was the second ticket and suggest the same thing. Given it happens at a stand still and there is no "erratic idle" i explained to him the symptoms a little differently. Hopefully we can get some headway and it would be nice if they reconsidered the $150. I've already paid for one adjustment and given this is something I would considered them to have already seen and dealt with considering they have our logs and it would have been evident in them.

That would be nice. When I email Josh this morning I will mention we spoke and let's see where it goes.

I dont have anymore information other than what's in my video.
Let me reach out to Snowman as he might have some details.
More to follow.

Did you have Lund fix it or someone else?
Rsnake

Lund fixed it really fast. I did reach out to Snowman and he's trying to remember what we had Lund change. It's tough getting old and forgetting these things.

OK. So I went back and watched my own video and all the information is in it.
The tuner needs to go into the idle Tab and under Feedback settings he needs to change it from +41 to -41 and your problem will be solved.
Lund did it for me easily.

I provided them that info (even included a screen shot from your video). They do all their work by ticket numbers, Usually all email communications with them includes the ticket in the subject or you can log into support.lundracing.com and see your tickets. If you happen to have it, it would probably help us skip the runaround we're getting right now. Understand completely if you don't or don't feel comfortable sharing it.

Thanks Jeff. I responded to them as well. I don't have my old computer when I originally did this a few years ago. I asked then to send me the info to download to a new computer so I can data log if need be. Also, the answer Josh got back from a tech was "that not at all something he would just randomly change because someone messages in and told him to do so." Hopefully they soften up a bit.

Wow! I cannot believe Lund is being so difficult. Let me see if I can get into my account as I haven't done it in a long time.
Nice customer service from Lund! NOT

Update! I was able to log in and on 11/16/2023 I ordered a subscription for $150
On 3/4/2024 they made a change on Ticket 213683. Thats all I have from the web site.
Maybe they can pull up 213683 and see what was changed. I hope this works as it's so
nice to have an engine that runs and idles the way it should.

Hi Jeff,
I got a reply from Lund just know. They say they need to do a new tune and the cost is $150. I'm going to go forward as my options are limited. let me know if you got a similar response.

That's what I received even though they just need to change one character. A quick way they can make $150.
Worth it in the end.

I got the new tune from Lund, uploaded it, and it works. Idles at around 700 RPMs and no more jumping up to 900 and back down. I wished I had asked the question along time ago. Thank you Rsnake for chiming in and being able to solve the problem. Jeffp, let me know when you get the new tune and it it worked for you.

Congratulations on the new tune and a proper running coyote. It's amazing that Lund still struggles with this and even more amazing that Ford hasn't fixed it.

Got it installed yesterday and tried it out today - nice and smooth. Maybe even idles a little lower at a stop so it has that nice rumble to it. Thanks for shaking the nest on this one! I'm sure there will be many more Gen3's having this same issue.

Congrats Craig and Jeff!
Beats the heck out of the obnoxiously loud 900 rpm idle.
For those who have a local tuner, it really is as easy as RSnake described, just change 1 character. I was standing with my guy and his laptop, and from my notes got him the target. He really did not understand what the change would do, but I told him to go ahead change it to positive. Then quick upload to car and end of problem. Thanks again Rich!

Glad to hear everyone is enjoying the new tune:)
My gen 2 Coyote did the same thing and I lived with it for 3 years. So much nicer to have it run correctly.
