View Full Version : When install carpet?

I am working on the footwells on my MK5. I know it is recommended to install the sound/heat mat before mounting the panels. What about the carpet? It will still be hard to get in there to glue down the carpet after the panels are attached. My main concern is the outer sides of the footwells. There is frame bracing in this area that is inboard of the outer panels. Do you carpet over the frame rails, which would seem a bit odd? Or do I attach the carpet to the alum panels and it would then be behind the frame structure?
The rest of the carpeted area are readily accessible compared to the footwells.
Not sure if this area of the Mk5 is different from previous models.
Suggestions would be appreciated.

On both the outer foot box walls (Driver and passenger) you need to be careful where the bar meets the door. With heat + Sound proofing and carpet there it will prevent the panel from sitting flush. I needed to remove some in that area. I did what you are describing in terms of carpeting those areas first. With the addition of the AC unit on the passenger side, I knew that it would be next to impossible to get back in there and get everything right. For me the carpet did go behind the vertical frame rail. I also used the carpet as a template for some of my heat/sound proofing. Hope that helps.

I finished the carpet before I closed the footboxes with the outer panels. Put carpet on the outer footbox panels separately.

Last major pieces to go on before the body.

Thanks for your input. I looked at a Mk4 and that area is very different in the Mk5, with 3 frame braces, versus the one rounded tube in the Mk4. I plan to cut the carpet out where the outer panel meets one of the braces to allow it to be riveted. I have already cut out the heat shield material in the area where the panels are riveted to the frame. So, you ended up with two pieces on the outer panel, one small triangle and a larger piece behind the two braces that have gaps to the outer panel?
Did you do the same to both front footbox panels and maybe the inside panels?
I have enjoyed your Mk5 build. Keep it up.

Kevin, are your comments about a Mk5 or Mk4?
Also, in seeing one of your other posts, are you really as old as I am? At 83. If so, what were we thinking.

Mine is a MKIV delivered in March 2014. Street legal with plates in March 2015. Was 83 last December. Think I am still 18. :D
Was pretty sure its the same deal as the MKV. I have carpet every place I have heat insulation. Doing the outer panels as separate items saves a lot of work.

Thanks. I love the wires. It keeps the tire-kicker away.
