Hi
This may have been asked before so apologies in advance.
I'm from Australia. My son is doing a semester in the US from August so on the way to his University, we signed up to do the Aug 1,2,3 course at Mott Community College.
It's a father-son bonding thing. Wife will be with us but not at the course.
So we read that Flint is maybe not so safe (context I haven't locked my front door for years). As all internet things, not sure if true, not true or a little true.
We fly into Detroit on July 30, will have a single rental car (I suppose we could get 2?). Fly out on Aug 4 morning.
So objectives are:
be safe
have fun
not be divorced because my wife has had nothing to do or hasn't felt safe

For those of you who have been, suggestions where to stay? We can be dropped off and picked up within a reasonable time radius by wife and she can go explore. Appreciate any suggestions/ideas. We obviously don't know the area but were thinking of Grand Blanc? Ann Arbor seemed a little far for a twice daily drop-off/pickup?
Cheers, sorry if silly question.
JP

I'm sure people who have actually attended the class can recommend specific hotels near to the downtown Mott College location. There's no reason for you to drive to Grand Blanc (close) or Ann Arbor (hour away). Don't believe everything you read in the news. Flint, like every city unfortunately, has some less than savory areas. But there's nothing dangerous about the location of the college or the nearby hotels. Make it easy on yourself and stay close. Of course take the usual precautions and I don't recommend leaving your doors unlocked. But you'll be fine. If you really want to get out of downtown Flint, Frankenmuth about 30 minutes north might be a more interesting location. Kind of a touristy area with lots of shopping, restaurants, and probably the world's biggest Christmas store. Your wife might enjoy it there.

We live about a half hour south of Flint. So know the area. Good luck and enjoy the class.

I was invited to sit in on one of the classes 2 or 3 years ago and stayed at the Hyatt Place Flint/Grand Blanc.

It was a 10-12 minute drive between the hotel and the Mott College Technology Center where the classes are held. There were other hotels at the same interchange (Hampton, Courtyard, Wyndham, maybe a couple of others) and a variety of restaurants nearby. it all seemed perfectly safe when I was there.

Enjoy the class; the guys do a great job!

I agree with Edward.

My opinion: There a large segment of the population here that seem fixated on and seem to talk non stop about "bad Neighborhoods" and "Bad people" :(

I also agree with Paul, I am up in Flint quite often no issues. While your their grab a olive burger at Halo a regional speciality. Also similar to Detroit, crime has been in a steady year over year decline mainly driven by re-investment in the industry in the area.

I did the course a couple years ago. The area isn't the greatest, but not terrible. Unsafe in the US would be considered very safe in most other parts for the world.
