Hello everyone!
My name is Jim and I got the FFR bug early last year and wanted to find out what this was all about! As far back as I can remember seeing 'loud, rumbling Cobra cars' as my dad would say. Then over the years, I would see one of these Cobras and there came a point when I had to have one! But at the same time I knew I could not allow myself to have a fast sports car since I tend to have a bit of a lead foot and probably would not have a license. I realized though later on that 1) I'm not getting any younger and 2) why not, how fun would that be. Extensive searches on the internet kept pointing me in the direction of FFR. I have done my homework! Many companies out there 'claim' to have what FFR offers, with kits offering this and that but I kept asking myself 'what are they not telling me?'. What is missing that even the fine print doesn't disclose? Simple answer: a lot. So with that much figured out, my next question was along the lines of what do I need. Unequivocally Factory Five had the answer, simple and straight forward.... For the most part. The little questions I keep asking now is: I have the engine figured out but do I go with front or rear sump? How wide of a rear end do I need to get? Will I be able to get a soft top for it (the one currently in the catalog online states only for MK3)? These are pretty much the few questions I have right now but at some point they will be addressed in my garage.

This is only a plan for now considering I am stationed out here on Oahu with the Navy. As of now I am planning on retiring in summer of 2015 and would love to get my hands on a MK4 kit. My plans are to go with the complete kit, new 427ci, Tremec 600, 8.8" and have gone through the order form for customizations such as seats and lower control arms. My plans are being thwarted though since I am out here and having just finished building my mountain bike I paid though the nose on shipping for various small parts.

I look forward to meeting anyone here on the island that has a FFR that could give some ideas to solutions before it becomes an issue!

Aloha!

Hi Jim,

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you've done some serious research and are starting to get your build plans together. FFR does have a soft top for the Mk4 - click here (http://factoryfiveparts.com/product.php?productid=16593&cat=258&page=1) to visit it's page on the FFR parts catalog.

Jim,

Give Matson a call and let them know what's going on. You would be best served by a 20'dry container from the eastcoast. However, I don't think Matson calls the USEC. Therefore, Stweart Trucking to Oakland and Matson to Ohau. You would need a freight forwarder to help you transload the kit parts from Steward to the 20'container. Let me know if you want some help. Before retirement I used to be in the ocean freight business and could coordinate the shippment details from this side. I think Steward is about $1500 to OAK and you can find out the ocean freight by calling Matson and asking for a quote for a 20' container with a kit car in parts. I'm sure there are other guys on the island that can give you a price idea. I have another company that is in direct competition with Matson that might be cheaper for the ocean part, Pasha Transportation. I'll contact them and see if I can get an ocean quote from them and let you know. In addition to the ocean freight there will be a transload charge from the "transloader" for moving the parts from Stewarts truck into the 20' container and securing the parts so they don't move around in the container while in route. PM me if you want more information.

Jim,

Got ahold of a friend that works for Pasha. Here's the scoop if you want to ship the kit to Ohau. Take delivery of the kit in a crate. Have Steward deliver to the port of San Diego. It would be offloaded and placed on a ship to Honolulu harbor. Cost for "friends of the family" for the kit in a crate would be about $2800.
This is, of course, if you want to build the MK4 while you are still in Ohau. This will give you some cost figures for moving the kit from Warhame, Mass to you. Hope this gives you some idea of the $$$$ involved.
