It has been a long time since I have posted on this website, but I may need some help. I just won the LCS raffle car and will be bringing it to California. It is currently titled in Ohio (I do not know their rules) and I want to know if I should go the SB100 route (if possible) when it gets here. My first roadster was a MKII that I built and registered back in 2003. This car was stollen from a garage two years ago here in Fresno (no recovery). I also went through the process in 2008 with a Daytona Coupe.
Thanks for any advice,
Doug

Congratulations on your win!
If the car already has a title (and listed as a 1965 Cobra / Ford) I would try just to register it.
If it is titled as a 2024/2025 anything the SB100 route will be needed for smog exemption.
my .02, good luck!

Sorry for the loss of your car. What a horrible feeling that must be to find out your baby was stolen. However, Congrats on your win!!! I hope your registration goes off without a hitch. I would be curious as to what the state will charge you in taxes. Whether they charge as just a car, or as income on the value of the car or for winning an asset plus tax for registering the car. I have read some of the fine print in these raffles and found they can charge up to %50 of the cars value in taxes. Just curious. I hope it's just the registration fees and not as income.

UPDATE--The car will be picked up today (7/4) in Ohio and delivered to Fresno late Monday or Tuesday. I will be starting the registration process when I get the title.
Ohio Title arrived today (7/9). The vehicle is listed as 2025 ASVE (Assembled Vehicle) Model Description: FFR 65 Roadster.
Off to the DMV tomorrow morning to see what they say.

Well, it has been a frustrating process with the DMV. At my original appointment on July 10th, the clerk that I was working with used the Ohio title for all of the information, filled out their paperwork and said that I needed to come back for a VIN verification and pay the fee due. We were on vacation from the 11th until the 20th so I drove the vehicle (with a TOP) to the DMV office. This time a different clerk looked at the paperwork and told me where to park for the VIN check, I did that and waited for almost 1/2 hour for someone to perform the check. When they did show up, apparently, she had talked to her supervisor about the Ohio title, and they decided that I needed to go to the CHP office for the check. Called the CHP for an appointment and got August 12 at 10:30. Seems that the Central Division has decided to have all VIN checks done at the commercial office only.

Ugh, what a pain. FWIW - I went through a similar runaround trying to register a new build with my DMV. The employee at the desk told me to bring my car around and they would do the VIN verification. I brought it around, only to be told that the DMV doesn't do VIN verification and that I needed to go to the CHP.
All I can tell you is hang in there. It's a PITA but you'll forget all about it once you're out driving the car.

Congrats on winning the Roadster. Hopefully everything will turn out alright. What I’d be curious about, is what did Cal DMV put on your temporary registration for a make and year model. If year model was 2025, then you might be looking at a smog check requirement every couple of years.
But, if things go south, here’s the number for BAR’s ask the ref (asktheref.org).

UPDATE! I have plates! After my appointment with the CHP on Tuesday where the officer let me use the FFR stamped vin he also checked the box "No emissions sticker located". I was a little nervous about that, but, my third trip to the DMV Office I was able to pay the fees and receive the plates. The clerk said since it was registered before in Ohio no smog would be necessary. I did not question her and walked out of the office with a very big smile.

Doesn't sound right. I'd think if you don't have SB100, don't be surprised if you get notice for smog check in the future. Hopefully you just got really lucky and the clerk checked off something that maybe they shouldn't have

SB100 is only for cars that have never been registered before. It's the process by which a VIN, title, and registration are created. If a car has been registered before in another state it does not go through the SB100 process.

It had 1965 on the Ohio paperwork, so no smog required in California going forward imho.
Maybe a GPS tracker (self powered) on this one??

First off there is no SB100. The California State Bill 100 became SBCNS for Specially Constructed Vehicles after it became law. Secondly, I have helped several customers navigate the State's registration when importing a vehicle from other states. Here is a quote directly from the states website for an SPCNS registration:
For an original California SPCNS vehicle registration, you must submit:
A completed Application for Title or Registration (REG 343) form.
The out-of-state title or manufacturer’s certificate/statement of origin (MCO/MSO). If these documents are not available, a receipt or invoice identifying the vehicle may be accepted.
Did you catch the Out of State Title?
Here is the direct link to the SPCNS page on CA DMV webpage.
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/specially-constructed-spcns-vehicles-ffvr-23
I make no claims on how or why the State offices choose to register these cars, Or how different folks have different experiences when registering their vehicle. I only know how it's supposed to be registered. And if you read the DMV webpage regarding "assembled vehicles", they ALL need to be registered as SPCNS. Agree, disagree, I really don't care.
