View Full Version : How to mount the drivers seat with a slide

OK, I purchased a universal slide mount and mounted them to the two rails running front to back on the seat. When I position the seat in the proper place on the floor the right side rail is outside the mounting plate by about 4". I know they need to be mounted to the steel plate beneath. How are you guys doing this? Is there a adapter kit? I was thinking of making a plate but I am not sure if that will work. Thanks for any input.

What style of slider? I had after market and did a lot of mods to seat frame. I have a nice file the late Dave A. sent me, if you want it I can send it out.

Look at Blitzboy’s thread. He used sliders. I mounted my seats to the Breeze reclined mounts.

Lance -- I'm interested in the approach you took. I'll be installing my seats sooner than later. I know the popular approach is to raise the front of the seat somewhat (Breeze product or equiv.), but I haven't bought any sliders yet.
I'll look at the 'cv2065' recommendation to check the 'blitzboy' build thread...
Also, heaters will be an addition for me -- several options, but always open to recommendations.

This is how I did mine.
Cut some rectangular tubing at an angle to make my recline slope. I bought my sliders from Summit racing. I tried a few different configurations, but finally came up with the picture you see here, almost complete. I also 3D printed a jig to hold the handle while I welded it back together (had to shorten it a bit). Pictures are probably not in order. :mad:215048215046215047215045215049215050

Was this the seat track[s] you bought from Summit this p/n? SRO-00493 ? And they're too wide... thus, the handle width reduction?

Yes, the Sparco seat tracks. And yes, I had to mount them much narrower than the handle was allowing. I think the original width was around 10" and I had to take it down to around 7". IIRC, the tracks are about 9" apart. Let me know if you need any more info.

I bought sliders to wizbangdoodle below. They are about an inch tall and have a handle that spans the two. I am thinking of something similar to what he did minus the tilt. Go ahead and send your file over and will take a look.

How thick are the metal plates you used? Where did you source?

I mounted my sliders to a plate using stainless steel rivets, then drilled four holes through the plate such that it could be bolted to the steel frame. My friend Craig welded bolts to the plate so that I only have to get a wrench on the nuts under the car to remove the seat assembly.

So I created a series of "adapter plates" that sandwiched the rails (e.g., one between the rails and the seat, and one between the rails and the floor). The idea was to allow me to position the driver seat where I wanted and still confirm that both sides were mounted as solidly as possible. The details are in my build thread: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?38979-The-Brew-City-Cobra-427W-IRS-Paint-is-DONE&p=560607&viewfull=1#post560607

Was hoping you could speak to how you dealt with the travel?
Summit mentions these Sparco sliders move 6.5” and have forward and rearward travel? Presumably 3.25” in each direction or all 6.5” forward?

Yes they only slide forwards, then stay there. Did you think about what you wrote?

I had always heard that the seat belt mounts were the most important in retaining you. Does it really matter if you have to hit the steel substructure with your seat mounts, since the seatbelts hold you in place. The seats themselves do little.
I may be incorrect, but just something to think about.

I did thanks for the words of encouragement Rich ;)
Who would have expected the Sparco item to be advertised upside down in the image. One would assume the image was correctly oriented.
Image on their site is upside down which at a glance appears its slid in reverse which would be why I had to ask if it slide forward and backward (from a centred position). Thought maybe Sparco sliders were “special” compared to ones used in past.
Also, FWIW Rich it appears some are in fact designed to travel forward and reverse over center. Cobra Seats out of the UK sells sliders they state travel 110mm forward and 130mm reverse over center.

Ran these from Amazon. $36. Agree on the seat belts but the slider get a lot of use getting in & out of the car. Reinforced my floor with steel plate where the sliders are bolted in.

Passenger seat is bolted straight to the floor as far back as it will fit.

Sorry for the delay in answering any questions. For some reason, this thread wasn't coming up in my subscriptions.
Since my car is in paint right now, I don't have it to reference any dimensions. I do have some pictures I took as I was putting it together if that might help. I went through a number of mock ups before I settled on my final design.

Probably less critical with the relative low weight for the seats in these cars (at least the seats I received in the kit), but consider a hypothetical scenario where the seat is not bolted to the car but the seatbelts are secure, even under heavy braking (or a front end collision) it is now your weight plus the weight of the seat that is pressing into the seatbelt. Said another way, the seat is pressing into you and pushing you into the seatbelt.
Just a way to think about it.

I ended up with sliders which slide 5” forward over center and 4.75” backwards over center. So they travel 9.75” overall. Not that we’d ever need that much travel but it is actually a thing ;)
The Amazon ones I looked at first only travelled 4” forward and had play in them. Unfortunately my wife 8” shorter than me and they 4” travel on the current DS just barley worked for her so the Amazon ones were not going to work either.
These ones i ended up with were the Cobra UK https://www.cobraseatsshop.co.uk/cobra-premium-seat-runners-469-p.asp?srsltid=AfmBOory6DE39aSF5n94-cXlhowyf59qF2rUp2qElqtQnimsZYBgI8Hs
