I’m Wayne, I’m 68, turning 69 in August. I’m at a point in my life where it’s time for a toy before it’s too late. I was into a new Mercedes, the GLE 63s AMG. 603 hp, V8 twin turbo, but….I can get into one of these little hot rods for a lot less. I was at the open house and spoke to some of you owners. I’ve decided to go ahead and do a build sheet for a kit, waiting to hear from the office there. I don’t have the means to do my own, no tools or lifts, so I’m going to see about one of the guys who do the builds. I understand there’s two. I’m waiting to sit and go over things, but in the meantime, I figure I can be a pain here first. I talked to a couple guys about inspection stickers. I’m in Mass, actually about 15 minutes from FF. One fellow said he doesn’t bother and hasn’t been stopped. To me, that’s asking for trouble. I’m a straight shooter type. Was wondering the general consensus on that, is it an issue, what do they look for... I spoke to a worker there and was told we get a vin number for the registry. I’ll go over all that at the proper time. Also, insurance. Is a Haggerty type place the route to go, or do most of you use your regular company? I inquired to Haggerty on another car I was interested in, and found they only allow weekend driving? Right or wrong on that? I’m retired and will be looking to do more than just weekends. I also figure I’m about a year out from having an actual car in my garage. For now, I guess that’s about it. Looking forward to learning about a whole new phase of life from the knowledge that I see here. Thanks

Hi Wayne,

Welcome! Are you looking to have a car built to your specifications or have you considered buying a car that has already been built? What are your thoughts on the car you want?

I was at first thinking to buy used but I think now I’ll go through a build sheet and start new.

Sign up for Bring A Trailer. If unfamiliar, it's an auto auction site. Lots of high end cars of all types including many Cobra replicas. A Kirkam sold recently for big bucks. There are FFR cobras on there almost weekly. You can set your preferences to be notified when one comes up. Even if you don't buy, it's fun to watch the auctions. They typically run for 7 days with lots of questions and comments from bidders and other experts.

As far as what I want, not full bore, but not cheap either. I want to have a driveable machine.

I am in Norton, MA and can assist with your build or just offer advice. I have assembled over 250 FFRs so far. Call me anytime

Welcome! I added mine to my State Farm policy with my other cars. $80k agreed value, 3000 miles a year, $28/mo.

Thanks. I think your name was one of the two. Ron Everett was the other on the Cape. I’ll definitely need a builder if this goes through

You can't go wrong with Ron either.

Just for insurance comparison, I use American Modern insurance. The car is insured for 50k, can drive 6k miles a year and pay about $360 a year. I dropped Hagerty due to too many requirements, price, and restrictions.

Wayne, I do not know what your voice sounds like, but some how you picked up a spectacular accent when I was reading your original post. I am building a MK5 with little background experience and loving it. I could talk days about it…..but I want to comment on your AMG GLE point……My Dad (RIP) and I acquired a habit of getting matching vehicles over the past 30+ years….typically he would follow my latest and greatest purchase…whatever I just got he would get …..until the AMG GLE came out (that is what they were originally branded the first 2 year they came out)…. What a great vehicle. He lead the charge on that one and I followed. He was super proud that I “approved of it”. He owned his until he passed. Such an angry/aggressive engine in sport+ mode with very refined trim and interior to match…like nothing else on the market. Great taste.

I sound like I’m from NY lol. Good catch on that.
