I talked about this briefly in a previous post. I purchased a holley sniper 2 and the holley 12-345 fuel pump and hanger. The fuel pump is stated to be 340 l/hr. They don't really offer anything smaller anymore. I bought the pump and hanger based on partially reading the install manual for the sniper 2, and it suggesting that 3/8 feed and return lines be used. Looking back now, I can see that is almost certainly a requirement for the maximum horsepower the sniper can support, but is almost certainly overkill for my engine.

My engine is a 302 from a 1992 mustang, with aluminum performer rpm heads, pretty mild cam, and a planned air gap intake.

As far as I can tell, this pump will pump about double the amount of fuel the engine could ever need. Which means I'm going to be pumping a lot of fuel through the pressure regulator and back into the tank if I use this fuel pump...

1. How bad is this? It's going to cause some extra heating and evaporation of the fuel.
2. Can I use the hanger, and replace the fuel pump with something sized a little more appropriately? Has anyone done this?
3. Am I over thinking this?

I think you'll be fine, but you are correct...that pump is much larger than the stock 88lph pump the Fox Mustangs had.

I'm using the same sized pump with a carbureted system that reduces pressure down to 5-6psi. I have the Aeromotive XI regulator. I did that in case I want to swap over to FI sometime down the road. I did it with my last build and had no problems.

Fuel pumps are cheap (comparatively speaking to other parts on these cars). For $105, you can buy https://lmr.com/item/LRS-9350B/1986-97-Mustang-190-Lph-Walbro-Gss242-Fuel-Pump, which is what I'm running on my 302. For my back roads cruising, it works just fine.

John,

So, that's a thing I was considering. The pump and hanger that I have were a pretty reasonable price, at least considerably cheaper than the only other 3/8 in/out hanger I could find, and that had no pump. So, I was thinking about seeing about getting a more appropriately sized pump and using it with that holley hanger. That would be my ideal situation, so that everything else that I've planned won't have to be changed.

That's a solid plan.

I sometimes wish I'd plumbed the 3/8 feed & return just because it's super easy to find fittings for those. For your case, there's no way I'd replace those future-proof size fuel lines.

As for putting a different pump in the Holley hanger, I seem to recall folks finding that some fuel pumps are slightly smaller in diameter than others. Wrapping a thin piece of rubber around the pump made everything fit better.
