View Full Version : Brake Pedal Postion

I'm looking for some ideas on how to move the brake pedal to the left.

Using the FFR Mk IV mounting position and hardware for the WilWood pedal box, I find that my foot gets trapped between the brake pedal pad and the foot box (right) inner foot well wall when I try to lift off the throttle.

I have the the brake pedal pad mounted all the way to the left. The throttle pedal is mounted as far to the right as possible. While different shoes do help (or hurt) this situation, narrower shoes don't seem to be a solution.

Has anyone found a way to move the pedal box to the left or to get more room between the brake pedal and the throttle pedal / inner foot well wall?

It sounds like you are using the stock Wilwood pedal pads. I found switching to Mike Forte's AC pedal pads actually gave me some additional clearance. This was mostly due to their oval tapered shape. It was just enough so that my foot would no longer catch the lower corner of the Wilwood pedal. That, and some Adidas Samba soccer shoes, worked great.

You could also trim your pedals down to whatever size you want. Cut between the holes and you won’t be able to tell.

Shoes make a big difference. The few times I took my roadster to work I had to put my work shoes in the trunk and change.

I narrowed my pedals by 1/3rd and also driving shoes make a big difference.

+1 on this suggestion!

I did this along with other mods to get my pedal setup better aligned

+2 on this, narrow AC pedals and driving shoes.

I simply take off my right shoe when I get in and throw it in the passenger seat. Problem solved. Hah!

I used to wear boat shoes 90% of the time. The one w/ the white 5/16" sole that sticks out to the side. I found that some careful knife work narrowing down the overhanging sole did the trick for me.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

You are right that I am using the Wilwood pedal pads. The way I have the brake pedal pad mounted, the right side of pedal pad is flush with the brake arm. I thought that maybe you were right and my foot was catching on the lower right corner of the pad so I took the pad completely off. Didn't help. Can't get much smaller than that so I don't think smaller pedal pads will help.

A number of replies indicated that shoes make a big difference. While I have worn my narrowest shoe, I thought I would try to see how much of a difference going barefoot would make. It did make a big difference. I could live with that much clearance. I guess I need to go shoe shopping.

I looked at Adidas Samba soccer shoes. The notes with them say they are not a good choice for anyone with a wide foot. As you have probably already guessed, I have big, wide feet (size 12 wide). I'm going to be looking at some boat shoes to see if I can find some that will work (maybe with a little knife work as GraigS suggests).

If the boat shoes don't work, I am thinking about other options. I don't think bending or cutting / welding the Wilwood pedal is a good idea. What I think I could do is to fabricate the FFR pedal box mounting brackets with a 1/2 to 1 inch offset to the left. (See the picture below for the brackets I am talking about.) I wonder if FFR would share the CAD files for these two brackets?? I'm going to be taking the body off soon for paint. That would be the time to make a change like this. In the meantime, I'll try some narrower shoes.

Are there any other ides out there?

With regards to shoes - yes, the Adidas Sambas are narrow. The Adidas Spezial and Gazelles are more forgiving with wider feet and the suede leather is softer from the start. What I like about these shoes is that the sole transitions smoothly with side of the shoes (unlike running shoes or boat shoes where the sole tends to stick out). You basically need slippers with soles. I suppose water shoes might work for wide feet too since they are made of very stretch material.

Is it possible to widen your footbox wall on the accelerator side and move the accelerator pedal over? I had to do this on my coupe for the same reason. It gave me an extra 3 inches. I also switched to Forte’s pedal.

This is the driving shoe my son bought me. Works great, and I have a donor peddle box.

Actual driving shoes make a big difference, Puma and Simpson make them. Mine are from Goodyear and I love them.

These will move your billet pedal pads right or left one hole spacing, offering greater flexibility when adding the billet pedal pads. These are $60 + shipping per pair and come with all the hardware to mount the Domino spacer and the pedal pads. Shipping is to the lower 48 states only.
Note: Billet pedal pads are not included and must be source from another vendor.

Contact us at: i.e.427garage@gmail.com and we can get you on the preorder list. We made 4 pair to start and I think they are all spoken for at this point, but we have 10 more pair in the works and should have them soon.
