Hello All,

I am looking for some fellow Factory Five friends in my area of Salt Lake City, Utah. I have essentially finished the chassis build of my Mk4 and I am now neck deep in the body work.

I have been go karting in my neighborhood (private street) and each time I drive the car I am nervous as if something is off about the car in various aspects, although I have had no issues and no reason to think so. I think mainly it is because there is no other experience like one of these.

What I'm hoping is maybe someone is in the Salt Lake City area that has built one of these would be willing to meet up and set my mind at ease, as well as talk about experiences in the build. I would be keen to come to see yours or if interested maybe come to check out where I'm at with the build, and offer any advice in these final stages with a coffee or a beer. If interested let me know and we can share details.

Thanks all, this forum has been and I'm sure will continue to be a big help. Happy building/driving!

Eddie

Eddie,

I'm on my second Factory Five build.

You're welcome to come and check it out, if you're interested. (We live in Midway.) Also, I've got a thread documenting the build (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?49920-Jim-s-Gumball2-Build-Body-Cutouts-and-Undercoating) and I'm just about ready for the first go-cart.

Let me know if you'd like me to come down to the Valley and check-out your build.

In addition to Jims generous offer, realize that each short drive where you have no problems will add to your confidence. And, even if you do have a problem, getting it fixed will also add confidence. Once you are licensed, do drives in ever larger circles. Think of putting 15 or 30 miles on a drive where you are never more than 3-4 miles from home. Not because of lack of confidence, but because I really enjoyed driving my FFR, there were countless trips to a store 5 miles away that somehow turned into a 15 mile trip. The long way home is great fun.

I've also assembled a small tool roll in my trunk to take care of any issues that might arise while I'm out and about. This includes a full set of SAE and metric wrenches, allen wrenches, zip ties, wire connectors, duct tape, screwdrivers, etc. A triple A membership also helps for peace of mind. If you can build the car, you can also figure out how to fix simple things if they fail.

I'm slowly building confidence driving mine, as well. Fortunately, I live out in the sticks with almost zero traffic, so I take short drives, each getting a bit longer, but never more than a few miles from home. I had the same challenge with my first build. It took some time to feel fully confident it wouldn't break down, but eventually I got over it, and simply drove it like any other car.

Jim, we split time between San Diego and Heber City. One year we're going to trailer our MK4 up there for the summer. Midway is an awesome town!
