View Full Version : Seat Belt Controversy

I went with tall back seats (I can feel eyeballs rolling already :) ) and I have some heart burn with how the seatbelts attach. IMO Using the stock attachment points is not acceptable if you expect your belts to work the way they are supposed to.

I did a short 3 minute video to explain my position and offer some options. Please let me know what you think.

Good video, and an interesting topic. When I bought my Schroth harness, I read their instructions regarding the shoulder strap angles, which are the same that you describe. I think for many people with the standatd seats and the high(er) backs I have, the belt would enter the bulkhead within the specified angle range, give or take. But then it drops down vertically to the mount. I don't know if this satisfies the spec. Your seats are indeed higher and I can see why you're trying to figure out a solution.

Then there's the topic of the anti-sub belt, which is not meant to loop up and over the front of the seat, as 99% of people do. That's why I went with the Schroth ASM 4 point harness, as I didn't want to cut a hole in the base of my seats.

OB6, Not to knit pick but from what I can tell from this pic the port for the left shoulder belt is what supports the belt. Technically the seat is not supposed to support the belt, it should pass through freely. It's not to say it can touch the seat but the seat can't be supporting anything in a crash sequence. That's what I was trying to get away from. Yours looks really close so I doubt it's too much of an issue but mine were a bit more severe.

Jim - that's a fair point. Fortunately my shoulders sit just above the ports, so the belts exit at the correct angle on their way to the cutout in the bulkhead. There are a lot of compromises with these cars (any car, really), so I'm ok with this. I may change my mind if/when I'm upside down. :D

Yours does not look nearly as egregious as some I have seen so I think you're fine. I know the crossbar is the most correct answer but I also know at some point I will have to sell this thing (or my kid will). It's a tradeoff between looks and functionality.

I have the Cobra Clubman's and I welded the crossbar .....

Once the belts are wrapped, not that much of the crossbar really shows,
and it is a convenient place to put a third brake light.

I thought about the brake light too. Where did you get yours?

A long time ago at a Goodguys show.
