View Full Version : MKV Build Findings / Kit Inconsistencies

I have been working on my build for a few months now and have discovered a few areas where there are discrepancies between the build manual and the supplied kit material. I understand that this is light years better than it has been in the past. I wanted to start a thread where we can consolidate/share those findings in an effort to make the build easier for others.
I will start with a few things I have found and hopefully others will add their findings as well:
1. Steering column: The links I received were not consistent with what would fit in the MK5. I believe they were the components for the coupe which are a few inches longer (I missed the length discrepancy during inventory). Relatively easy fix to cut them down to the specified length but it took me a little bit to identify the problem.
2. Coyote Accelerator Bracket: The complete kit (MKV) comes with a separate Coyote accelerator bracket. This particular bracket is not needed/can not be used on the MKV because of the mount that is welded to the frame. On p9 of the Coyote install instructions where it mentions “roadster only”….I believe that is referring to the MKIV given the publication date of the instructions, yet that bracket is included in the MKV Kit. This one did not take that long to figure out, I just wish I hadn’t spent the time powder coating that part.
3. A/C + Heater and Carbon Fiber Dash: Make sure you know what you are getting/not getting. The compressor is not included in the A/C + Heater kit. (At least not for me which is fine because I plan to use an electric compressor). Additionally the CF dash is really not set up as conveniently to mount the vents as the coupe. That is just to say it takes some creativity. Nothing too hard, just don’t expect it to mount right up as there is no default location for the vents. In my opinion, with the CF dash, an under dash panel is almost required to give you good vent locations……however, with the right after market vent you can make it blow forward towards the diver/passenger and/or down into the foot box.
Those are the big ones that I can think of at the moment. I would be interested to hear from others who are into their MKV build.

The steering shaft is too long on the MK IV as well. I had to trim mine.

With Mk4 Roadster/Coyote and Gen3 Coupe/Coyote builds behind me, I've yet to have an FFR provided Coyote DBW (accelerator) mount that fit or worked. Made my own in both cases and frankly not a big deal. If the Mk5 has a built-in mount that works, that will be a first. I'll find out soon enough. :)
To be honest, I don't find any of the three issues you raise to be in the "big one" category. With the nearly unlimited combinations and variations of parts potentially used, build configurations, etc., every build is going to have some challenges along the way.

100% agree that none I listed were big/unsurmountable. I did not mean for it to sound like a complaint or a slight on the kit or documentation quality. My goal is to highlight some of those bumps in the road so that others are aware from the onset…and to learn from similar experiences others have had.

No need explain Tango, your intent was obvious to most everyone. This web forum is no different than any other these days. It's chock full of pompous gasbags with fragile egos...

Wow, if that was meant for me, have a nice day. :o
I'm 100% in favor of being open and honest about issues with kits, problems encountered and solved, etc. I've posted my share. Factory Five isn't perfect and they'll be the first to admit it. I was very interested to read the content in this thread because I have a Mk5 on the way myself. I meant no disrespect with my response. The OP said "...Those are the big ones" which I quoted. Yet the problems listed, in the grand scheme of things, are relatively minor. Sorry if pointing that out was offensive. It wasn't meant to be. Maybe I could have been more diplomatic. I try to be helpful and constructive (really) and anyone that knows me would agree. But sometimes this social media stuff gets a little old.

No offense taken on this end. I understand how it was intended and appreciate the time and detail Edwardb provides in these forums.

I’m not going to escalate this but Paul goes out of his way to help people here including me. This place is special precisely because it’s nothing like everywhere else. I’ve made actual, real life friends here.

31 posts in 14 years? Might want to educate yourself on the amount of direction and assistance Paul and others on this forum have provided new and experienced builders. Paul’s build threads have and continue to be standard issue reading when working through the build process.

Tango and Edwardb - You are both Class Acts. Fellow builders on this site appreciate any information that will help their project move forward. I now that I could have never completed my build without the information provided in this forum outside the guidelines in the build manual.

Awesome! I can’t wait for another incredible build thread to follow along and reference when I take the plunge soon.
Tango, thanks for starting this thread, it will be a great reference as new MK5 kits are assembled

I totally agree. Thanks Tango and to everyone else doing a Mark V. I will be starting mine soon and will for sure post all the things I screw up as a warning to others.

Great idea Tango - thanks for starting an MK5 thread - will be good to understand progress and findings around the bizarres - we will post a build update shortly + photos - no major issues so far but we are making some changes & modifications as we go like everyone else....pro-m fuel hanger and wilwood electronic parking brake.

Regarding the Coyote Pedal and the MKV….. check the clearance/fitment of the pedal on the bracket BEFORE flipping, marking and cutting the pedal. I did not and wish now that I had. I believe the pedal actually works much better in its original configuration. The angle is better and the clearance to the side panel is improved.

Just a personal comment. Am a member of a number of car forms. I found this one & the other FFR forum to be the best on the net for the quality & helpful attitude of the members.
Its a kit not a shake the box & self assemble unit. It may or may not require some changes to accommodate different sets of equipment. In my case as an early COYOTE user I had to fabricate a new drivers gas pedal side foot box wall to accommodate the cylinder head.
No big deal got some advice from Edwardb & other guys here. These changes started to show up on later kits as the COYOTE gained popularity.
