I am about to receive my MKV kit and it seems like one of the first steps is to mark the aluminum panels and start building. I have chosen to use LizardSkin for sound/heat. It seems like it would be easier to spray the panels while they are on the car and there are no "parts" to have to cover. Is there a downside to doing this? thanks for the advice! I am sure I am going to need a lot of it.

On the Mk4, the panels will get in the way when you’re installing ‘the parts’, so I’d recommend spraying them later. Yes, it’s a pain to cover/mask before spraying but I would imagine it’d be even more annoying to try to work around the panels later.

A good tip I got was leave the panels removable for as long as possible.

I'm a bit confused by how you worded your question. But the normal sequence, which I've done multiple times and recommend, is to follow the usual build sequence, e.g. suspension, brake lines, electrical, etc. Then install the aluminum panels. Then the Lizard Skin, which is an alternative to various stick-on products builders use at the similar time. Yes, there's plenty of masking but the spray goes quickly. About the same amount of total time as measuring and placing the stick-on pieces. The picture below was when I was applying on my Coupe build. Even more to mask with the roll cage. One hint you may have read in other threads -- don't take the panel placement as shipped from the factory as "gospel." They are placed for shipping and sometimes not exactly accurate. Finalize the locations with all the panels together.

I'll second the sequence that Edwardb outlines. Here's my roadster masked off prior to spraying Lizard Skin. The masking took way longer than the spraying but it wasn't too bad.

Make sure you spray in the footwells. You’re going to want as much insulation as possible. I did the butyl mat, then lizard skin, then carpet on top. That area still gets hot.

Thanks for the help. Man those are masterful tape jobs!

Another question about Lizard skin:

After masking and spraying, do you have to pull the masking tape off before it fully dries or can you leave it?

I don't want to have it dry completely and have a mess getting the tape off

Thanks!

Pull it when it’s wet. Once it dries, very hard to pull and you may need to cut. I do two layers of masking tape. One for each type (sound and heat) since you have to let each dry before the next.
