Hi guys,

I'm doing research for my planned 289 build and found the pin drive wheels I'm looking at are available from both Triago and Vintage Wheels. I see folks mention Triago in the threads but not Vintage - does anyone have any experience (positive/negative) with either vendor? Vintage seemed like it was an interesting option as they offer machining for their wheels to fix different suspension configs - was wondering if they could machine the offset to compensate for their pin drive adapters (need to call them on that one).

Thanks!

Rob

Hey Rob, I have a set of the black FIAs from Vintage - I like them a lot. Still in the build stage, so I've really only rolled the car around on them. Spinners and adapters are well made (make sure you use anti-seize) and the powder coating on the wheels is a nice finish. Interesting note - my wheels have 'Trigo' cast into the back of one of the spokes, so I dont know if Vintage buys from Trigo or gets castings from them and modifies them... Either way, I'm a fan. From what I understand, you really cant go wrong with either vendor but others here may have more insight.

Thanks! And out of curiosity - did you go with the solid rear or the IRS with your build? Thanks again!

Vintage is a good shop.
Not sure what wheels I'll use but Vintage is certainly in the running.

If I am reading the Vintage site correctly, it looks like $3500 for 15” black wheels, adapters and spinners. Does that sound correct? Did you consider any other options?

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm planning to purchase the wheels in natural finish, and the set with the installation accessories is around $2650 from Triago, and $2900 from Vintage (without shipping). Getting them in black is a bit of an upcharge, but if I recall correctly, I was quoted around $125/wheel for powder coating from a local shop so $3500 is pretty much on target. As far as other options, I really want the pin drive wheels and that specific look, so I'm a bit limited. I've seen other guys go with the 15" Halibrand type wheels on their 289 FIA cars, and that looks great too. I do prefer the 15" even though it really limits tire selection. I'm going for a vintage look, and the wide sidewalls give me that.

I'm planning the same. I just ordered my kit. Would you be willing to share a picture of the pin drive hubs on your car?

Thanks!

I have the Trigo pin drives on my 289, photos here: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?49616-289-USRRC-build-in-Seattle&p=564002&viewfull=1#post564002

I think the pin drive FIA wheels really make the 289 look so good.

Also - I apologize if you know this already - but you have to order the shortened rear axle and the shorter LCA's to accommodate the pin drives.

That's the look I'm going for, and I thankfully ordered the shortened rear and pin drive front suspension. BTW what size tires are you running on yours???

Thanks for the info! When I was debating going with pin drives, it was your build photos that pushed me over the edge. Those big meats look great on this car, and the generous sidewalls look just right. And the suspension with the pin drive adapters in place is so sweet...

Rob

Your build is amazing!

I did order the shortened LCAs. I'm pretty sure someone told it in one of the threads, but what did you use to trim the wheel studs? Did you do the same for the steering tie-rods?

I like your chassis dolly. I'll have to make one if someone nearby doesnt have one they could lend out or sell.

Hello all,
I am new to this forum, so I do not know much.. But, I do know that when you order the 15in FIA pin drive wheels from Vintage Wheels, they are actually drop shipped from Trigo. I found this out when I ordered my wheels from Vintage, I got the adaptors but no wheels. I contacted Vintage and the gentleman said that they will be delayed because the gentleman at Trigo just had a heart attack and was recovering.

Thanks,
Brian

I suspected something like that was happening - thanks for confirming! I hope the gent at Triago is going to be OK.
