View Full Version : Turn signal audible indicator wiring?

Since our weather has improved considerably the last few weeks, I insured my roadster for the road once again. I switch over to a storage policy for the winter months, as it saves a considerable amount of $. There has been the odd day in winter that I am tempted to take it out for a spin, but I winterize it in the fall, and don't want to have to repeat the procedure all over again for a day or two here and there.

It felt so good to take it out for a cruise again, but I was soon reminded of an issue that has plagued me over the years, of realizing that I have been cruising along with my t/signal light being left on.
I use a simple on-off-on toggle switch, which doesn't reset after turning other than by clicking it off manually. My indicator lights work fine, but are not very obvious when driving in daylight. The relay clicking sound is completely inaudible with wind and side-pipe noise.

I have a nice little hi-pitch beeper which I tested on a 12V battery and it works perfect.
My dilemma is trying to figure out a simple method of wiring it. My signal relay unfortunately is in a spot behind the dash that is extremely hard to reach. I realized after I finished installing the build that I had located it in a dumb spot..:( If it was in a simple location to access, I know there are relays that can replace the standard ones, that have a more audible signal, so there's no point in telling me about these types.

The easiest part of the system to access is the toggle switch wiring. I'm a little uncertain if I can wire just the one beeper somehow, or if it would be easier to just add two, one for each side of the switch. This would avoid having to wire in diodes, as I had to for the t/signal lights. Thinking I could simply run wires from the two sides of the switch to the beepers, the other wires to a ground.

Suggestions?

That's a good idea. I'd just wire in two beepers, just to make it simple. I might have to try this. While I usually remember to toggle my turn signal off after a turn, I do forget from time to time.

If it's a 552, they used to make "audible" units. No wiring needed.

I agree w/ Greg, it will be so easy to wire in two beepers and avoid the diode headache.

Sorry, I don't follow the 552 aspect mentioned. Is that a type of switch?

552 is the super common flasher. I think he is suggesting something like this that just replaces the flasher. It still works as a flasher, but has the audible output added.

I used the Watson Streetworks buzzer, simple enough wiring - one wire to ground, and one wire each to left/right - works great!

Yep, truly a "plug-n-play" solution! No wires are damaged during installation.

Oh OK thanks..
Like I mentioned in my original post the relay (flasher) is in a hard to reach spot to replace it.

Yes that would do the trick for me. Simple wiring involved. Just have to tap into the toggle switch wires by the look of it.. Can you hear it quite well?
I thinking about mounting it at the bottom of the dash pointing down, rather than on the dash facing me. Hope it's sound is still audible enough.

I ordered 1 of these yesterday and they called me later and said they were on indefinite backorder and didn't expect to get any more of them so they cancelled my order.

It's pretty loud. I have mine mounted in the corner of the fuse panel and I can still hear it even with the engine running and ear plugs in.

I installed an Audicator.

Designed for motorcycles in the UK. Used on lots of open top sports cars, Caterham 7 etc.

I gather you mean the 552 audio relay was backordered? The link to it, is for a two post relay. Is that what your car has?

Did you also order the Street Buzzer device that Toadster mentioned? I wondered how that may have worked out?

Hi Bill, I did order the street buzzer device that Toadster mentioned but I haven't installed it yet. When I do install it I'll post the results. I may get it installed next week.

I guess it works, cannot hear anything but the engine.
Maybe location of your phone or my bad hearing.
I am making these comments, because I need one of the audible flashers and I prefer, plug and play.
Thanks,

The flasher signals I have from billet buttons combined with Frank’s turn signal unit (I.e.427) makes an audible flashing click like a regular car. Works great.
