Bought this T5 from Summit and this cap looks pretty “temporary”. Do I need to remove this and replace with something? The threaded hole next to it makes me wonder if there’s not a more permanent plate I’m supposed to install?

Yeah, that's where your speed sender goes if your not using GPS gauges.

And if you are using the GPS gauges, you can either put a dead-head sender in there anyway (my kit came with one back in 2015), or fabricate a block-off plate.

I have the VSS that came with my Complete Kit if you want it. No charge.

If you're speedo is GPS (e.g. FFR Vintage aka Speedhut gauges) you don't need the port. Cover it properly. Google "t5 speed sensor block-off plate" and you'll get a bunch of choices. Forte sells one too if I recall. If you need the speed sensor, get one without the speedo cable connection. Unless you're really old school and using an actual speedo cable. Unfortunately, at least on the kits I've received, the sensor provided is the cable version and they will leak if no cable is installed. Guys have tried to seal or plug them, without much success.

Easy to make a block off plate out of some thin metal

Yup. That too. Just make sure it seals.
