For those with experience with the Ford 302, here is my current layout for the front of the engine. If I am going to add Power Steering on my MK1 and I am guessing that I will need to move/reconfigure the belt components.

So, I am looking for options to best set up the PS addition. If there were brackets or something unique in your suggestion, please let me know what those are.

TIA,

Mark

You could change from your current V-belt to a to a 2 belt serpentine conversion system:

https://www.cvfracing.com/ford-289-302-351w-serpentine-conversion-kit-alternator-power-steering/

Or change to a single belt serpentine configuration (but that would require changing the water pump and possibly the timing chain cover):

https://www.cvfracing.com/ford-5-0l-5-8l-serpentine-conversion-kit-alternator-power-steering/?sku=5.0L-SERPENTINE-PS-4-N&gc_id=21400666445&g_special_campaign=true&mtm_campaign=21400666445&gclid=Cj0KCQjwzrzABhD8ARIsANlSWNMBHWNOgQxvG4tOceik iIJOB8r-eMtysHUX1iW-Q6IihHvLIAM4w9kaArGCEALw_wcB&mtm_source=google&mtm_medium=cpc&mtm_cid=21400666445&mtm_group=&mtm_placement=&mtm_content=pla&mtm_kwd=2551&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD2mx9Fd2GsB-i9HmvxFrNxvCNWlt

Retaining the v-belt setup and going to something like this would be the least costly option:

Maginter, like one of Jeff’s suggestions above, I used one of the CVF single serpentine belt systems. They have a special one for these cars now that moves the alternator position to high and power steering to mid-high. Just search for “cobra” on their site or
https://www.cvfracing.com/ford-289-302-serpentine-conversion-kit-high-mount-special-cobra-configuration-with-water-pump/

It also uses a ClockWise water pump so unless the snout length is wrong yours should work.

I ordered the alternator, PS pump, PS 800 psi reduction valve, and water pump from them. All work great with about 15 hrs on the motor including 3 go cart sessions.

I ended up using a slightly longer belt than they spec’d because I had both the alt and PS toward the outside of their adjustment. If you go this way, PM me and I’ll send the part number.

I had 2-3 sessions with their tech support and got timely, effective answers.

Thanks Budfive ! That is where I am leaning. WOuld you mind sending me a picture of the front of the engine? I would be interested in seeing how you did your mounting.

Thanks!

Thanks! This looks great! Did you get the Saginaw PS pump that CVF offers in the purchase page?

That setup has very marginal belt wrap on both the crank and water pump pulleys. I hope it works out in the long run but I wouldn't do it myself.

Agree totally with Craig, that is going to be an issues at the crank, the water pump might be ok(?). It doesn't take much to spin the water pump, but the crank has to power everything

I agree with Craig and Rich…not enough belt wrap at the crank.

Maginter, yes I got the Saginaw pump and pressure reduction valve.
Craig, Rich, Jeff-good feedback from some forum heavyweights-yikes! Not a problem yet but it’s early. If it becomes an issue I think there’s room between the crank and alternator for an idle pulley to provide more wrap on the crank. And I’ll report it here so others know.
