Standard dino oil, with friction modifier if it's not already in the oil, not synthetic, the friction plates aren't designed for it

I loaded mine with the friction modifier from LMR and some Pennzoil 75w140 after I did the gear swap. I searched online and found that 75w140 was recommended.

FWIW, LMR sells Royal Purple 75w140 with their gear sets...

At the shop, we use synthetic Valvoline 75w90 in the squeeze bags (you'll thank me later lol), and don't forget the friction modifier.

I agree Friction modifier or NOT I'd Never use a syn lube with a Clutch plate Limited slip. In the 90s I tried one that was high dollar and claimed it was fine with and LSDs and even included a friction modifier. It was not fine with in 6 months my limited slip went to a unlimited slip.

Motorcraft 75W-140 and a small bottle of the Ford Racing Friction Modifier. This is as per Ford. Keep in mind that differentials build more heat than you think.

I have been using synthetic gear lube in my differentials since they first started appearing on the market in the late 70s. I have never had an issue with any of the vehicles with a limited slip not functioning properly.

I put 250,000 miles on a Dodge Dakota with a limited slip and at the first oil change the diff had synthetic lube until I got rid of it. The limited slip worked perfectly. I currently own a 68 Barracuda that I rebuilt/regeared the rear axle about 80k miles ago and use synthetic gear lube. This rear end has lead a tough life with many smokey burnouts and the limited slip is working fine.

FWIW, Motorcraft sells synthetic gear lube that is recommended for limited slip differentials and is warranty compliant. If you buy a rear gear set kit from Ford Performance it comes with Royal Purple synthetic gear lube.

The only caution I would make to anyone considering synthetic gear lube is not to use any friction modifier even if the bottle is not clear that it is not required. You can always add some later if you find the limited slip clutches chatter going around corners.
