I am in the planning stages of a Type 65 build. Years out.

The build will reflect my ethos of mechanical simplicity. I am an ASE trained mechanic, so no issues facing this challenge. I love all things mechanical. My watch even has a mechanical movement.

I want to have a carbureted 289 (270hp max, HiPo clone) with a mechanical camshaft and point-gap ignition. Manual transmission with cable driven clutch. No power steering, keep the unboosted brakes. 3-link solid rear axle with an Eaton Trutrac LSD. 15" halibrands, preferably pin-drive and spinners, maybe Goodyear "billboards."

The car will be red, probably a narrow white stripe like the Scuderia Filipinetti car. Wipers, side windows and full carpet. All mechanical Stewart Warner guages with a wood steering wheel. Probably A/C if I ever want my wife to ride along. Would wonder about inertia reel seat belts instead of the harness. Also exterior door handles and locks.

I hope to be able to build this car with my only child. But she is only 4 right now. She is into cars.

I currently have a 2003 Mini Cooper S I've owned since new, a 1976 Chevy K10 that belonged to my father in law, and a 2018 Jeep JLU Sahara I bought 2 years ago.

I hope to learn all I can from this forum.

You've landed in a good spot! FFR... and their Forum.
I'm building my Mk4 with my wife's 13 year-old grandson. (WHO gets to build a Cobra at that age -- or ever?)
He stays overnight and works with me two days. I have a lot of engineering and fabrication experience, and I'm always surprised with his insights, for otherwise having no mechanical background.
We're less than half into the project, but he has already learned patience: taking things apart... again; noticing clearances that need to be improved; deburring and more deburring; AND it's the journey that should be enjoyed!

Welcome aboard, but more importantly welcome to the Factory Five Racing family.

I totally understand wanting manual steering and brakes because I still prefer having them after being street legal for nearly five (5) years.
Like you keeping my car, The Redbone Roadster, as simple as possible simply made sense to me.

Good Luck, Have A Great Build & Watch Your Pinkies!

Sounds like a fun time with the grandkid.

I live in middle of nowhere rural Nebraska.

Thanks. I fully expect to offer a blood sacrifice at some point during the build.

Welcome to the Fun. You sound like me and your car sounds something like my build (in progress) even though mine is a 33 HR. I absolutely love the idea of "mechanical simplicity" If only I had a VIN number from my state so i could get the plate I want "NO ECM"

Register another car with the plate to reserve it. Might be odd or confuse some, but you'll have the plate. Could even buy a junk car and plate it just to get it. Then transfer it over through the DMV later.

My wife has had the same custom plate since 2003 over 5 cars.
