Hi all,
Just thought I'd share my experience at my local DMV office in Whittier, CA. I've read up on the SB100 process so I thought I knew what I was in for. However, this time they took copies of all my paperwork and they "suspense to Sacramento" whatever that means. I think it means it was going to the abyss. 3 month went by and I had not heard anything so I made an appointment to inquire about it. Again I tried explaining about how I'm supposed to go through this process of going CHP for inspection and Brake & Light inspection and the BAR, etc. The lady insisted that they had done it correctly and that Sacramento had already issued me plates. This came as a surprise to me but a month later I had my plates in the mail. The DMV official came out and inspected my car but that was the only inspection on my car. Plates are installed and I'm now driving legally in California. Go figure. They either got it wrong and I slipped through the cracks or there's a new registration procedure in our state.

Consider yourself lucky. Hopefully they don't catch their mistake and take the plates back. Maybe there was no mistake and that is how they do it now but I can't imagine California would make anything easier.

I'm worried I may have to smog my car every two years now like everybody else. We shall see...

This definitely doesn't sound right. I cannot imagine that CA has suddenly waived the CHP, BAR and B&L inspection requirements. I'd reach out to Sacramento and get to the bottom of this, or perhaps go to a different DMV for a second opinion.

You didn't get an SB-100 (smog exempt) number?

If you got an SB100 number you're good.

Nothing like my experience exactly one year ago. I went thru the well documented process of SB100 in about 7 weeks.
How does the title / registration read? what is it called? what model year?
In any case, if you have plates, drive it!
Let us know if you get a "smog required" on your registration renewal in two years!

I may end up doing that. It's cool that it was so easy, but something isn't sitting right with me about the whole thing. Thanks for the advice.

Unless registration has really changed for a new build(?), your Make should have been “SPCNS”. Yr Model should have been Blank and Year 1st sold should have been the year it was purchased. It used to be that you would go to DMV to get temporary permit for X amount of days. Then to CHP for a Verification of Vehicle document filled out by a CHP officer (by appointment). Then off to Brake and Light inspection. And then to a local BAR Referee Station for inspection and smog check (by appointment). After all this back to DMV for finalizing.
I went through some issues with mine, but it was only in the 2nd year. DMV sent me a smog check notification.
To clear it up I had to call the following number, which is the BAR Referee number. It took a few calls to get it cleared up, but I was given a case worker that I bugged a little, to keep myself in the loop on what was going on.
Try this number, it seems to be still valid. You might want to start asking questions now, rather than later.
State Referee Center (BAR Referee Program phone #) 1-800-622-7733
This number in case things have changed.

If the model year is listed as 1965, that is pre 1975, so you should not ever need a smog inspection.
Mine reads:
MAKE "SPCNS" YR MODEL "blank" YR 1ST Sold "0000" *YR "2022"
Still strange how this went down, but don't rock the boat. You have plates!
