Who knew

My fuel gauge stopped working. Autometer didn't offer the style I wanted in the 16-158 ohm so I purchased a programable one instead. At some point last weekend it stopped working. It turned out to be the sender. I purchased and installed a new one and it works fine now. I won't bore you with the details but it was definitely the sender but it took me longer to figure out since I assumed the complicated electronic gauge was likely the problem.

During the troubleshooting process I must have turned it to run 20 times. The pump primes but but as it turns out it must also squirt a little fuel in the cylinder as well (I didn't know that). I am not sure if it's all of them or how much fuel but when I finally started the car it sputtered, choked then stalled. I re started it and when it finally kicked a bunch of fuel smelling smoke came out of the pipe. Since that time it's been perfectly fine. I am just adding this to the forum in case anyone else ends up in the unusual circumstance of constantly setting your ignition to run without actual starting the engine. If I was in this situation again I would un plug the injectors.

Yep, most efi systems squirt fuel at key on. Just like pumping the throttle on a carb. It's a parameter that can be adjusted by a tuner.

Not some thing I would have thought of either. Thanks for the heads up.

Just an FYI on unplugging stuff on the coyote. I had a MIL that wasn't working properly (turned out to be a bad LED). In the process of trying to troubleshoot I decided to try to generate a fault to trigger the MIL by unplugging the MAF sensor. Turns out, that generated a permanent DTC that can't be cleared by a scanner. Lund was finally able to program it out but it was a real PITA.

Mine did this on first start and I just assumed it was because it had not been ran!! Glad to know it's normal

My own car a little 2016 fiesta, get flooded EVERY time i put gas in the tank Not filled Full, just filled at all. I suspect the charcoal canister is flooded and the vac hose to the engine gets filled on startup is the reason it does this.
Thankfully the auto software engineers have programed modern OEM EFI systems have put in the programing a clear Floor Mode. Simply shove the gas peddle to Wide open throttle And it will Shut off all fuel while cranking.

I suspect the aftermarkets EFI computers have this as well. Especially if they use OEM programing as a base and modify the code from there.
