View Full Version : Wiring headlight switches like this...

I am about the 4th or 5th owner of my MKII Roadster. The original builder did a decent job with his donor build, but his wiring certainly leaves something to be desired.

I have removed the dashboard because a couple things don't work and I don't like how he laid some things out, but anyhow, while I've got it apart, I want to set up toggle switches so that I have:

1. One switch that turns all the marker lights on.
2. A second switch that turns the headlights on.
3. A third switch to switch to high beams (although I suppose I could use one switch that is off-on-on to turn on the headlights and also go to high beam.

I wasn't sure if this was a thing, but I just saw pics from the dashboard for a FFR Type 65 showing it:

I think I have pretty good idea of how to hook up the wiring to make this work, but I would appreciate if anyone has already done this or knows the best way to do it can chime in.

I'm thinking the first switch will send power to all the marker lights (obviously) and also to the second switch (I don't envision a need to have the headlights on without the marker lights, but I dunno - maybe?). But what about high beams vs. low beams? Am I correct in that you don't want both headlamp filaments lit at the same time? So you would want the regular "low" beam filament to go out when you switch on the high-beam filament, no?

Here's an option for you that I provided another member. Put your toggles in place of the "button" switches. I definitely would run relays to control the load. You don't want that load going through a simple toggle. If space is necessary, use the mini-sized relays, which take up less space. You can modify the 12v feeds as this is what the user is doing with his setup.

Thanks! I'll have to study this a bit, but it looks like it will help.
