I'm hoping to go on some longer trips with the MK4 this year, I'd like to install a Whitby Soft top.
All things being on schedule the car will have paint and bodywork done later this year. I thinking it would be better to wait till bodywork and paint is done, has anyone else installed a top before paint did it create more work afterwards?

I have a soft top on our MKII which uses lift the dot fasteners to secure it . The lift the dots are screwed to the body , I think I would want to do any drilling before paint . I also put some clear paint protection film where the top rests and the side windows. We really enjoy the top on long trips , Ed

I’d vote for fitting before paint. I installed my Rod Top on my finished car and that was only two holes, but standing there getting ready to drill holes in a painted car was very stressing. We’ve taken several multi day trips in ours. The top makes it much more pleasant, especially on highway legs, keeps the sun and wind from beating you up so bad. Best of luck whichever way you go.

Thanks for the input guys.. I hear what you're saying, I was thinking about the possibility of disaster if drilling through a painted surface but wasn't sure if adding bodywork/filler etc. might make a difference. I agree, the top will add days to driving - especially on road trips. I like the color John, looks like "British Racing Green", I'm still negotiating color with my wife, she plans on driving it as well.
I'll be interested to have a look at you're install video Fixit, every bit of info counts.
