So the roof has this thing that looks like an air intake but I doesn't seem to exit anywhere useful. what is the purpose of this?

It looks like it vents to the engine compartment, perhaps to help cool? However, the outlet is not open.

should I drill a hole in this to help ventilation into the engine compartment?

The purpose is to force air into the engine compartment. FFR leaves it up to you to cut the exit hole depending on how you setup your ducting. Also keep in mind that if you don't have a good way for air to get out of the engine bay, then nothing will flow in.

As with all things 818, Art Quillan did a comprehensive job of optimizing the roof vent. His comments on rain water in the inlet are worth consideration.
