Finally getting around to updating my mk3.1 from manual to power steering. I have the manual rack out. I need to change the steering shaft adapter from the manual to the power one. I have both of the set screws removed, but I can not get this adapter to budge. Is there some trick I am missing to get this adapter to separate from the u-joint?

Its very tight. Try wedging a small sharp screw driver int he joint to get it started. Or grab it with vise grips then tap it off by hitting the vise grips

I found that it will go in easily at certain angles but almost impossible when the wheel and rack are centered. I turned the wheels a few degrees right and turned the steering wheel to match, then the pivot angle allowed me to slip the adapter on.

Thanks Guys, I will give it a shot with the vice grips. The challenge is there is not a lot of room to swing in that location and it is difficult to hold the u-joint steady. Currently the gap, or lack of, between the u-joint and the adapter is so tight, I can not even get a small screwdriver blade in there. Maybe a little heat would help? I'll go back to do some more battle with it later today... Film at 11.
