View Full Version : Status on MK4 trunk floor re-re-redesign?

I know when the MK4 was originally introduced, it had the trunk floor redesigned to drop lower (just above the tank) and added significant space that was originally un-used and much appreciated with the new drop-butt design. I saw a couple months ago that that was re-redesigned, due to some panel fitment issues (I believe, that was the reasoning), but that it was under re-re-redesign to go back to the dropped floor.
I ordered my kit last month and was wondering where this activity stood. (with all of the new projects going on, I'm betting it's on the back burner, but I hope not).

Any other minor changes / improvements on the roadster in the last few months?

btw, I like the new sight, still getting my bearings on the navigation.

I did a video post about this mid-course change. I wasnt wild about the compromise, but the reality of the tooling was that it was just so difficult getting the trunk steel to not deform in the new Mk4 configuration, so engineering went back and changed it. The result was that to keep the rigidity in welding and to make sure the aluminum lined up right (we were rejecting 1 out of 3 frames!) the floor was changed. It is easier to build/rivet, but the drawback was the floor came up a bit and the net was a loss of space. I guess the guys made me happy by saying we could do a drop-in trunk tray since there is good air-space between the top of the fuel tank and the new bottom of the trunk. There is a cross-member there, but a tray can be made to access more space. The project is on the back burner since any part would be an easy retrofit. I dont imagine coming back to that and if FFmetal or someone else makes one we won't.

Mine was a early Mk 4 and it was one with the "new" floor. I got a good one, all the panels fit as good as any part on the car.
