I'm considering purchasing a partially built Gen 2 Coupe.
What were the major upgrades in the currently offered Gen 3 Coupe?

Totally different body and chassis. Significantly improved chassis stiffness and much more cockpit room. Gen3?will accommodate the Coyotes whereas the earlier Coupes will not without pretty major modifications.

Were the kits back then as complete as the current ones? All the finish stuff like lights, hardware, etc? Or was that something people sourced themselves?

If the kit you're considering is a complete kit it has everything. A base kit would not have the wiring harness standard, for example, although it could be added as an option. Another difference might be spindles. Gen2 could use either donor or FF spindles, which are superior. Gen3 only uses FF spindles. The Gen3 is a significantly improved version. If you were looking at a finished Gen2, it's worth considering. But if you're going to build one, I'd sure recommend the Gen3. We love ours.

The difference between the Gen 2 & Gen 3 Coupe frames is a little like the Mk4 vs Mk5 Cobra. The Gen 2 has a 4 inch round ladder frame and the Gen 3 has a space frame made mostly from square tubing and this increases the interior room. Plus many other details were changed that improved the car handling and comfort.
Nothing wrong with a Gen 2 coupe but it will be harder to get into it and there is less passenger space inside.

I'm not building a track car so comfort is important. Thanks for the advice.

Comfort will very much depend on your size. At 5’9” and 160 pounds I’m comfortable when in a in a Gen2 but my buddy who is over 6’ and 200 pounds isn’t…but he fits well in his Gen3, and loves it!
