View Full Version : Too much Camber?

So after getting everything in the front end of my Mk4 tightened down several weeks ago, something has me scratching my head....

I'm 95% sure I have everything in the front end installed correctly. Setup is with Ford power steering, standard FFR front upper control arms. FFR lower control arms, FFR spindles etc (yes, I know that the FFR spindles go on opposite sides than how they are marked - and they are installed that way). I cut the "rearward" sides of the upper control arms as most others have with this setup, anticipating that this would be needed to achieve enough camber etc. I set the UCA's per the instructions from FFR (same as I have done with a prior build)

HOWEVER

when I had it all together in the air, I looked at it and said.... huh, that's a lot of negative camber! I set it down (no motor in it yet) and expected the wheels to come much more "upright" than they did. Then I adjusted the UCA's out, a LOT - like 50% of the distance of the threaded connection, and it's still not really all that close to "plumb" upright. I realize that total upright wouldn't be correct, but they're like 3" or more from it via a

Thoughts -

I'm assuming that all of the UCA's from FFR are the same, so I don't THINK it's possible to have the wrong ones. That and the fact that the measurements are the same as what FFR has dictated makes me thing that's not the issue.

The LCA were also ordered from FFR, I know that there are a couple of versions of these, but I'm pretty sure I have the correct ones (12066, 15" - Standard width LCA's for use with the FFR front spindle set - 14507) I've measured the LCA's just to be certain, and They are indeed 15".
I have them mounted in the lower, outboard mounting holes as instructions show, and many other pics from build thread show as well.

Questions:

Is everything correct, and I'm just over thinking it? (That's been known to happen)

Do I have incorrect parts, or is something installed incorrectly? The lower control arms I think are the most likely failure point. Either I have them installed in the wrong holes, or I have the incorrect LCAs?

Have you actually done an alignment, or are you asking based on the rough initial measurements? If the latter, I'd get it aligned, then reevaluate.

Actually, I just noticed the engine isn't installed. It's hard (if not impossible) to measure without the car fully loaded.

Those sideways pictures are making my head hurt.

It looks like your front UC have plenty of adjustment left in front arms of the uca’s. May have to work the toe at the same time to get it looking right. You can get a close alignment without the engine but you would probably have to disconnect shocks and set frame at ride height.

If you set the frame to about 4", you and get the alignment really close, once the car is finished set the frame back to 4" and the alignment will be the same.

Is the "juice worth the squeeze" with a car that is incomplete? I can appreciate getting it close, but until it is finished, I personally wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it.

You have the forward link screwed way in which will result in more negative camber and less positive caster. Set the springs to give you a 4" ride height and adjust the sleeves so that you have dimensions like this and you'll be in the ballpark on caster and camber. Note that these measurements are from the center of the grease zerks.
