View Full Version : Longacre 45490 + Keyed Switch - Will this work?

I want to install a Longacre 45490 off/run/start toggle switch (for appearance), and I also want to retain the (hidden) keyed switch (for security). I'm using FFR wiring with a basic Hersey/Cole keyed switch (Acc/Ign/Start/Batt terminals). I've read several threads discussing various installation opinions for the Honda "button", but not what I am considering. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the following will work, or if not, how these switches should be compatibly wired?

Proposed wiring:
Connect battery wire to battery terminal of keyed switch (provides power to keyed switch).

Remove 'ignition' wire from keyed switch and connect to ignition wire of toggle switch. (toggle now provides power to ignition when toggle is in 'run' position).

Install new wire from keyed switch "Ignition" terminal to 'battery' lead of toggle switch (keyed switch when in 'run' position provides power to toggle switch.)

Remove 'start' wire from keyed switch and connect to 'starter' lead of toggle switch (toggle now controls starter solenoid).

I am presuming the resistor will protect both switches because I am using the current wiring from the keyed switch, except for the "ignition" to "battery" lead.

Any thoughts?

If the hidden key switch is strictly for security reasons, why not keep it simple, and just install a keyed battery master switch. You wire that inline on the positive cable running to the starter solenoid. You can then wire up the start and ignition on toggle switch, using the wires that would normally run to a standard dash mount keyed switch. If you want the ACC function, I'm thinking you will need a separate toggle.

Thanks for the input Bill. The primary purpose of the keyed switch will be security, but if I remove the switch completely I have to deal with a hole in the dash. I have a battery cut-off, but its only measure of deterrence is a flag key.

I wired the switches as I outlined and everything worked as expected. My only concern now is the Longacre switch is prewired with 14 ga. wire and the wire harness for the battery, solenoid and ignition is 10 ga. I may replace all of the 14 ga. wire in this setup with 10 ga. to match the harness from each switch to termination points.
