View Full Version : Side pipe Question

I have a brand new 302 blue print Ford engine with BBK headers and matching J pipes. I cut out the 3 inch hole ( just to get started) on the drivers side for the side pipe today. It looked real good. I went to the passenger side and started laying out the hole for the side pipe. After close inspection I realized that the J pipe on the passenger side is one inch closer to the ground than on the drivers side. I hate that. Not sure if this is a normal occurrence with the BBK headers and the J pipes. I have been thinking of modifying the J pipe to raise it up approximately one inch or a little more . This doesn't look like an easy modification or I will just have to live with it. Has anybody else have this problem. Any suggestions or come back is much appreciated.
Thanks

Loosen the motor mounts and level the side pipes by tilting the engine slightly

Yep, what Rich said. I mistakenly leveled my engine before I put the headers on, only to realize if my engine sat level, the pipes weren't level. I loosened up the motor mounts, got the header flanges equidistant from the ground, and tightened everything back up.

Just hit the “easy” button and loosen the bolts at the header to J-pipe ball flange. You can then raise it upward, down, forward or back as necessary to set the sidepipe distance from the ground and align them with the body.

This is what I did, and was questioning myself reading the first few comments until Jeff posted this.

Thanks for this suggestion Jeff. It worked great. I ended up with the side pipe on the passenger side in a good position. On the driver's side the side pipe is a half in lower than the passenger side and the support bracket is touching the fiberglass. Not sure if that is normal or not. Have you ever heard of a tapered spacer at the end of the J pipe.? A tapered spacer would not only move the side pipe a little further away from the fiberglass but would also raise the side pipe. I was thinking about using some washer spacers to do what I am talking about to see if it even works. If the tapered spacer is not available, I might try machining one with my CNC mil.
Thanks for all your help. you are definitely a gem on this forum.

Breeze makes tapered wedges for this exact purpose

Yep, as Chewy said Breeze offers wedges and spacers of various dimensions which depending on how they are oriented will allow you to be able to roll the pipe upward or downward and/or bring the rear into or away from the body.

Also when you start messing w/ tapered spacers consider going to 5/16 bolts w/ hardened washers. These in the 3/8 holes allow one more adjustment.
