View Full Version : Dash gauge shroud and steering wheel clearance

So I have been working on my dash layout and installation recently. While doing so I noticed that with the gauge shroud in place and my steering wheel pushed on the shaft, but not even fully tightened down, my knuckles actually contact the shroud on the right hand side when turning the wheel. Clearance on the left side is fine, as the mount as delivered from the factory is actually slightly canted inward relative to the dash. I do not have the Russ Thompson turn signals, or a remove-able steering hub. Both of which I'm guessing might eliminate this problem by spacing the wheel back further. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this? Obvious solutions to me at the moment are making a spacer for the wheel or simply trimming the shroud. Again, mostly just curious if others have encountered the issue. Its a Gen3 car.

loosen the set screws on the bearing behind the dash and pull the wheel out to the desired distance. Retighten the set screws.

Ahhh yes. Many thanks. Yet another (should have been obvious) answer. I went back and re-read that section in the manual. Slid it out as far as I could per the instructions. the spring washer is JUST barely in the shaft now. I gained maybe 1/4". It should be enough.

The other option, don't install the shroud. I found it tight and did not install it.

yep No shroud for me as well. It would really cut down on your finger clearance.

I have considered not installing it as well. I have noticed on pictures/videos of other builders opting to leave it off. For whatever reason I've always kind of liked the way it looks. Also, it seems functional as gauge lights do tend to glare on the windshield at night otherwise. Even after backing the shaft out as far as possible its still a bit tight, so I think I'll try to trim it down in the vicinity of the wheel on the RH side.
