View Full Version : Hydraulic Clutch Cable

One of the remaining items before my first start is the routing of the hydraulic clutch cable. I have the correct adapter fitting but am a little worried about length of the FF supplied braided hose. I know the doctors here will ease my anxiety. Have a great day.

No such thing as a hydraulic clutch cable. Do you mean hose?

Not many rules about this. I can only think of two. Don't put a kink in it and keep as far away from exhaust (especially header tubes)
as possible.

I used a 36" line with a Tilton HTB - worked well.

Looks like the FF braided hose is 30” and would seem a little short. Do you have a source for a longer hose like you 36”?

I built mine using standard AN-3 hose and fittings like for a motorcycle brake system. No kit, just know-how.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the difference between a number 3 line or a number 4 line?

-3 has a hose ID of 3/16" and -4 has an ID of 4/16" (1/4").

I hard lined my Clutch M.C. and used a 12" braded hose to make the connection.
I figured since I ran all the brake lines that way, why not do the same with the clutch too.

Yup. One concern I have is fluid flow. With mine, it almost feels like there's a flow restriction when quickly actuating the clutch. If I fully actuate the clutch, and then AS FAST AS I CAN lift my foot off, I can barely withdraw my foot faster than the clutch pedal comes back. Nothing worth swapping everything out, but there's a lot of fluid flowing thru that line in a short period of time to actuate the clutch and if the line was larger, the fluid would flow quicker.

I mean, I've got a 40" line from the MC to the SC that flows a couple ounces of Dot 4 in a fraction of a second, so it makes sense.

The engineers know what size to use. It moves a small amount of fluid, maybe 15-20 ml, an ounce, or less.

Same for me, hard line to a bulkhead fitting and then a short length of braided hose to the HTB.
