I did a thing. 10 minute project, and it makes life a lot easier. I use a 500cc syringe with a flexible hose, so I can fill without jacking up the car. I realize I'll still need to get under the car to remove the drain plug, but this sure is easier access to remove the fill plug, and to fill the transmission.

Fill thru the shifter. Pull the shifter from the top and stop when fluid starts coming out the fill plug on the side of the trans. Easy peasy.

I thought about that, but down the road when the car is completed and the trans tunnel cover is permanently affixed, I thought I might not have access to the shifter bolts very easily.
Love the out of the box thinking. Very practical. Things like this make the car uniquely yours and it's always satisfying to be the one who thought ahead to make a maintenance item easier in the future.

For sure. I was getting ready to loosen the fill plug from above (don't have my trans tunnel top installed yet), and it was kind of awkward getting a ratchet on it. I thought, "hey, a hole in the side of the tunnel would make this easier", so I did it. It's definitely easier to get the fill plug out.

You just need a Slippery Pete. You can fill from top, bottom, any angle.

Great idea, my 68 MGB GT has the dipstick fill on the top front center of the trans. tunnel underneath the dash. There is actually a plug there for access. Only trick, don't get the oil on / in your carpeting.

When I pulled my engine/trans recently I installed a plug (https://americanpowertrain.com/shop/transmissions/transmission-install-tool-and-seal-protector/) in the tailshaft so i wouldn't have to drain the fluid. And promptly knocked it out on the crossmember dumping most of the fluid onto the garage floor. Should have used duct tape.
For pulling/installing I like removing the shifter as it's just something to hang up going in or coming out. And as others mentioned that's an easy place to fill with fluid. I removed the plug on the side and watched until fluid started coming out (and into a catch pan). Getting the plug in or out form the bottom is very easy with a 3/8 ratchet. I don't have the manual e-brake installed so can't say if that would make a difference.
